Tikka T3X Varmint

Hi All,

I've got a Tikka T3X Varmint. I'm looking to save a little bit of weight so wondered if I could swap the varmint stock for a normal profile stock? Does anyone know if this would work? The varmint model has a heavy profile barrel, so not sure if the normal profile stock would fit it?! Any thoughts anyone??

Thanks

Tom

The std profile barrel is (as you say) smaller than Varmint.
I have a std stock for sale, with pics of the measurements. I don't think your rifle's barrel will fit ....
If you were c;loser you would be welcome to come and try it ....
The main weight of your rifle is in the barrel.

I currently have a T3X stock (not the varmint with the adjustable cheek piece ....) which will fit your barrel and would be interested in the adjustable stock - again a shame you are not nearer.

The forend will come off..... but will take away very little weight....
Shorter barrel will help, depending what caliber you have you may be able to go down to 18 inches and still be able to shoot out to 300 yards with minimal difference...
A titanium bolt shroud and bolt knob from turvey stalking will drop a few grams....
Dont use steel rings... go for alloy instead....
Apart from that nowt else will help....
I'm having mine rebarrelled as we speak... a light varmint contour at 20 inches... wont lose that much weight but will help... I also found mine front heavy so I've wrapped a couple of 36gram shotgun shells in foam and stuffed them in the butt of the stock... it's as much about the overall balance of a rifle sometimes.

Where abouts are you based? The varmint stock i have isn't adjustable, but has a higher comb and a wider foreend. I'll measure up my rifle tomorrow and see if it will fit your stock...

Any chance you know how to take the foreend off? Does the higher comb also come off?

Thanks for the rest of your advice - really helpful!

How much do you want to spend?

If I were you I would get a PSE stock, carbon = lighter + stiffer. Probably more accurate too if you go for the bedding (the whole barrel is free floated up to the action).

Multi Purpose would be ideal for stalking and will take a Varmint profile barrel, E-tac or E-lite if you want to do some range stuff or vermin shooting.

Don't waste money on swapping your stock with another standard Tikka one, sell it to offset the cost of a better stock.

Sterk make the best titanium bolt shrouds and handles. These improve the action but the weight savings are negligible.

Awesome, thanks for the advice, I'll check them out!

So I have a standard T3x and I replaced the stock with a PSE stock.

The stock is outstanding and I am extremely happy with it. However, the weight saving is pretty minimal.

As other have said: all the stock modification you do, and all the accessories you swap is just rearranging the deck chairs on a cruise liner. Your core issue is the barrel, and no amount of fiddling will change that.

Shorten the barrel, replace it with a standard profile barrel, or get a different rifle.

Cool, thanks.

Does anyone know what the cost of replacing a barrel would be??

As Rory says above ,i,m in the same boat if i can carry on i will trade/sell my varmint for another lighter model same cal. at the moment its an itch!.but i love it.

The stocks on the super varmints really ain't that heavy mate. Stripped mine to clean them times. The barrel and mod are the biggest weights and if you've a bipod as well it's a lump. Don't think you'll gain much really made bar an empty wallet

The injection moulded factory stock of a Tikka is probably the lightest on the market, whether that is adjustable or not. Real noticeable weight saving can be gained from moderator choice or not using a bipod.

Cheaper and quicker just to get a new rifle.

Barrel replacement: you won't get much change (if any) out of 1K, and could easily be waiting 2-4 months (more if the proof house was going slow - and they are currently closed). And you get no money from the old barrel.

New rifle: new T3x Lite (depending on calibre) for between £850 and £1050. And you would probably get between £450 and £700 (depending on condition and calibre) for the old rifle to offset the cost. Time? It would take as long as it takes your local Police to process a 1-for-1 variation. In normal times, that would be between an hour and 2-3 days. However, most Police forces are not currently processing variations.

However, since we're not meant to be out, there's no hurry.

In your position, I would start advertising the gun on here and Guntrader and try to get it sold while waiting for things to get back to normal. Once it's gone, you can be ready and waiting to send off for the variation as soon as the Police are back open for variations.

Yes. Unless you just get a new rifle!

And who doesn't like new rifles....
A new tikka will be the same as his old tikka.... except with a standard stock (no raised cheekpiece for better cheekweld) and no option of the wider forend without additional cost to buy them.....
And the cost of a picattinny rail as his rifle will already have one.....
And..... he can have a different length/twist/contour/thread option with a new barrel......

Yes its nice to have a new rifle..... but sometimes nicer to have one that you know you cant get "of the shelf" . Although I dont have much choice with off the shelf rifles anyway being a leftie....
