Its time to replace my Hilux D4D 2004 Mk 5 . I've had it 11 years with no problems and it has never let me down. how much should I ask for mine? its never had any paintwork repairs, doesn't burn any oil. it has a few dents and the bumpers need replacing .
I would like to buy about three or four years old.
What would you buy another Toyota or a Nissan, VW, Ford, Mitsubishi?

Was in the same boat with an ageing 05 reg Hilux. Looked at a new Hilux, but the whole AdBlu thing put me off.
Went in the end for a near new Isuzu, dealer took the Hilux in PX for about 7.5K.
Very happy with the Isuzu.:D

If you go for a 3 or 4 year old Toyota, you won't have to worry about the adblue. Isuzus are good.

I have an early 2014 Hilux 3.0 auto that's now done 60k miles. It's been brilliant, but thirsty. My main issue is the one year warranty on the rear tub. Mine had a nasty rusty spot which I thankfully spotted early. The Toyota claims engineer told me most people know about this and get them under sealed from new, which I thought was just a disgrace.
Apart from that, I've gone through a set of tyres and front discs and pads, a warranty door seal.
My tuppence worth would be buy a 2.5 unless you're doing big motorway miles and want more comfort.

I went through this debate just recently, I ended up buying a new Toyota Hilux... I don't see why Adblu would be a concern, it's £15 for a top up every 10k.

Ford Ranger was nice but far to many serious electrical and mechanical horror stories. Even the 2.2 goes well, I didn't try the 3.2 but can imagine it's mental.

Izuzu also very nice, I would have maybe gone for one but I needed to buy new to get the basc discount and really really didn't fancy a 1.9tdi which is what the new one comes with. I also heard they break and the warranty is a bit **** despite being 125k or 5 years.

VW... not my cup of tea at all.

Nissan, I didn't consider because of the historical problem of them snapping in half. I'm sure they have fixed it but trust lost.

mitsi l200, we have lots of them at work and they are money outs after 30k and break.

Fiat based on l200, awful.

All that being said the Hilux isn't perfect. I've had new windscreens and I've only done 5k I'm convinced they are a weak point, the new hybrid Toyota suffers weak windscreens and was recalled. The Peking sensors on the rear do not work when it is raining. It has a weird rattle up from which is a known common problem and can be fixed but it's still annoying. The rear pickup leaks awful despite me paying for all the seals etc, annoying for the dogs in winter I'm sure.

Basc discounts on the Toyota was 18% which is pretty incredible. If you claim back Vat as well then your laughing.

Hilux is the best of a bad bunch, engine and 4x4 capabilities are awesome, better than my defender ever was. Comfort is also very good, economy averages 32 to 34 mpg. I've had 39 on a long run and mines an auto. I would go for the auto as then it's a Japanese engine on a jap box. Go for the manual and it's taiwnese manufactured.

As below -

Hilux - have one and it's been bomb proof. Heard the new one isn't as good engine wise as it's smaller than my 3.0. Literally the slowest car in the world but I love it for practicality.

VW - Chelsea tractor

Dmax - I would buy one buy I believe you can't get BF's for the blade?

Ranger - too many mechanical horrors I have seen

L200 - like driving a boat

I was worried about the 2.4hilux but it's fine. I don't tow very often though.

I drive it in eco mode everywhere which is really slow. In normal mode it's fine and in power mode it's got plenty to be honest, no slower than the competitor as the new Isuzu is 1.9!

I believe there could be a new engine planned for the hilux?

I keep hearing about the 2.8 that they get in aus buts it no Euro 6 compliant, they could use the land cruiser engine but haven't done yet or announced anything. I doubt I'd swap for just an engine upgrade, but would be interested to try it at least.

I have a seven year old 3 litre Hilux 60,000 on the clock and I couldn't be more pleased with it. I don't do a big mileage but off road it's brilliant.

It seems to me that I will keep it for the forseable future.

Really !! That's amazing, almost beyond belief in fact. :thumb:

Had Toyota ,Mitzi and Nissan , now on a Dmax auto just done under 10,000 miles in the year and a bit I've had it,no problems at all I actually prefer it to my Hilux which was the best of the rest.

I got sucked into the landrover cult following, and sure they are good... but I've been stuck less in the Hilux than I was in the defender 90. I have even deliberately got stuck in places where I've had to be pulled out by a tractor in the defender and the Hilux has pulled itself straight out with the turn of it's dial without difflocks.

Sure the D90 would probably still crawl up a rocky green land better than the Hilux, but that is a niche off-road activity.

Hmmmmm, OK,fine.

Hilux all the way. I bought a 58 plate 2.5 d/c and it's been great. The amount of fiddling mates do to their Landies is insane, just to keep it on the road. You always seem to hear bad things about other trucks reliability. Sure there are things going wrong with Hilux (old 3.0 had injector issues, new ones seem to have windscreen issues) but not on the scale of other trucks.

.....it's funny how folk reckon what they bought is the best just like you never hear a bad butcher advertising bad meat?

You are are right about the parking sensors. I thought it was just mine.

I have the invincible x. I put an alpha gsr canopy on it as I was advised this is the best sports type canopy. Toyota have a deal with truckman.

Its a decent truck and I agree with what has been said above. The only other truck I like is the izuzu with the larger engine, last of the old model.

Whilst it it is superior to my Land Rover defender hcpu, it lacks the character. I therefore use the defender most of the time.

For or anyone getting one, the active is fine. I got the x because I wanted the reversing camera and it in green.

where was the rust, underneath or in the bed under a load liner?

I've got the 2012 hilux d/c , 3litre auto that's done 89000mls , a lot of which has been towing and off road and it's been faultless..Downside it does like fuel ..would I have another ? Absolutely.
