Just a few pointsLatest update:
Called in the shop on Saturday. Spoke with the owner who took the gun out. Showed me a pic on his phone of 5 shots he'd put through it at around 85 yards. 40 grain federal I believe.
The 'group' was shocking, about 2" or so. When I told him that was shocking, he started to explain that the 'first shot was high, so I adjusted the scope, then the second shot was' .................. Stop there I said. You weren't supposed to be zeroing it, you were supposed to be shooting a group to check for shot consistency. He didn't even take my moderator but took one from the shop!!
Some of the other things we discussed were how many different sets/brands of scopes and mounts I'd tried, different ammo, how I zeroed it etc. Off a bipod and bag, I explained.
Then questioned my shooting style and experience.
Then things got silly and I had to really bite my lip..... Grrrrrr
He asked me if I wore my reading glasses when shooting. Erm, no, they're for reading. Then told me I should!!! (What a Bell smacker)
He also told me fixed mag scopes are more accurate than scopes with a zoom.
At this point, I told him I shoot much better groups at 100yds with my CZ 17 Hmr and went back to the barrel condition. Despite my rigorous cleaning and the fact that 2 separate people at another gun shop have said it's fire cracked and worn, he's adamant it's just heavy copper fouling. With that said, I've asked if it can be scoped again and a digital recording sent to me.= to which he has agreed.
He's taking it back out sometime this week, but I think I know the answer already because he's told me 'It'll be the moderator, definitely'.
I'll let you all know how I get on
I would expect a better group from a 17 hmr
Variables can be problematic ( depending on quality of scope) if changing mag when shooting at set distances
His explanation about zeroing the scope , is his explanation, you should have said can you please shoot it in a gun vice, if you had said stop there to me I would have asked you to leave.
He may be right about the moderator, had a ar10 threaded by Hardy’s and one of there suppressors, shot sxxt, until it was redone and a new suppressor.
I know nothing of the gun shop, but at least they are going out of there way, considering the time since you purchased the rifle and they only have your word for how many shots you have used.
Here is a true story of one of my customers
A brand new bergarra 300 win mag, four months old, Gun will not group.
Apparently has fire cracking in throat of barrel, so a gun smith he knows has told him
Only fired factory loads. Perhaps 30 rounds
We ring bergarra importer, who says send gun direct to there Gun Smith in the South Island ( regarded as the best gun smith, gun maker in NZ)
Interesting reply and photos returned with rifle, normal wear in throat for a magnum, and a lovely picture of a primer in the chamber, probably caused by loading to hot a load and blowing the primer out. Strangely his gun smith had not spotted this when he scoped it.
100 mtr, three shots touching,
Called customer to come into shop, asked about home loading he was doing, he picked his rifle up and has not been seen since, yes the customer is always right.
