Wanted: Truffling in the SE.

Very interesting. I've seen a few videos on truffle hunting. Looks good fun and I believe quite profitable.
Good luck finding some.

I was told ( not sure if it’s true ) there is a large newly planted ( last 20 years ) hardwood plantation an hour south of Edinburgh where some of the trees had truffle spores deliberately impregnated on the roots before planting. One of my farmer friends did the same a few years earlier when he planted wind breaks, I’ve always fancied trying the GWP and JR terrier at finding out if any have developed. Seems like a good exercise for the dogs.
PDV!

Yes, as far as I can tell, true. For a brief period I had a demonstrator on a field course who came from a forestry background. He’d done part time work on this very estate, and swore blind it had happened and that he’d helped.

The story goes that there is a stretch of limestone exposure in Midlothian (this is true - it’s associated with the coal measures). PDV was desperate to add prestige to his estate, and had mates with vineyards etc in France. Someone pointed out that the limestone meant that the soil should be appropriate for truffles. So off he went.

At enormous expense and dubious legality, he imported plugs of soil said to be impregnated with the spores. At even more enormous expense he prepped an area of ground and planted beech trees (possibly also imported). Sat back and… Scottish weather happened.

It’s vanishingly unlikely that truffles will ever grow there. Chanterelles, on the other hand!

I believe @stu847 works on the estate. He may know more…

Evening all,

Just revisiting this thread for the 2025 season if anyone is interested. I was out this morning with my dog and after the rain last week and few a few nice black truffles so a few about now!

Drop me a line if anyone fancies it.

V best wishes

Very intriguing subject , and thanks for sharing.

My first ever taste of a truffle was ironically in (Hum) when I lived in Croatia some years back.

Would you be interested in selling any? I've never actually tasted a fresh truffle, and I'm very intrigued.

If you get the train out to Shoreham, Kent, there are lots of woods on north downs chalk owned by Sevenoaks council with free access - see Shoreham wood/andrews wood. Andrew’s wood has a lot of beech.
