Tyres for a Tiguan

Looking for recommdations for some more practical tyres for my tiguan as I have about 1mm left until I hit the tread limit.

She currently has the the 235/50r19 hanooks that came from the factory - they are not bad, but I would like something with a bit more grip off-road (forestry tracks/rides/stubble fields).

I have looked at AT tyres and the nearest match I can find are 235/55r19 faulken wildpeaks. Has anyone tried increasing the tyre profile on their Tiguan? Can 5mm really make that much difference?

Failing that, can anyone recommend a set of tyres for the tiguan/suv that they are currently using on their stalking vehicle?

I was in a similar situation with my Freelander last year and went for the Falkens. They seem fine on the road and have got me out of spots where I’m sure I would have struggled with normal road tyres.

Hi Jimo - where you able to find falkens that matched the original size of the Freelander tyres?

This ^^ 55 is the aspect ratio, the diff between 50 and 55 in this case will be more like 20mm+ greater tyre wall depth over the road tyre.

Unless you're going to run a smaller rim the 55/19s are probably about as good as you'll get. The difference between a full road tyre and an AT is night and day btw, and then MT over AT is night and day again.

Thanks @Disco_Richy - I don't think I will get away with another 20mm sadly.

On the look for another tyre me thinks.
 
Or, depending on budget and space available, get some second hand 18" wheels (7Jx18 ET43 5x112 57.1mm) and 235/55R18 General Grabber AT3 tyres.

Yes I could get a straight match. I have seen a cross reference chart somewhere that gives different sizes but with same rolling radius. Think it was on a 4x4 forum.
 
General Grabber AT3s in 19" on my Freelander 2 do a great job. Have 17"s on my Terrano 2 and likewise do a great job there. Civilised on road and capable off road, done both over the last few days in the Freelander and just drove 180 miles back from Scotland this morning, nice trip.
 
I haven't looked at sizes but I ran the Yokohama Geolander ATS tyres for about 50k miles and they were great, and very decent on the road. Currently I'm running Pirelli All Terrain Plus and they are also great both on and off road. Both these tyres are aimed more at the SUV market and those wanting to be more subtle rather than people who want white writing and chunky treads for reasons of show so they may be available in a size to fit for you. Worth a look.

Unfortunately, and I had to learn this as well, if you want to go off the road and need tyres for the job then the first consideration when buying a car has to be the size of the rim and the selection of tyres to fit.
 
My understanding is that the Aspect ratio is the ratio of the tyre height as a percentage from the wheel rim to the tyre edge in comparison to the width of the tyre in millimetres.

Taking the 235/50 x 19 tyre. A 50% aspect ratio, is 50% of the 235 mm width which is 117.5 mm (in height). With the different tyre i.e. 235/55 x19, the tyre would be taller, as 55% of 235 is 129.25mm, so 11.75mm taller. This would also throw your speedo out slightly as the new rolling radius would be greater, so your speedo would under read a bit.

The ride height will be 11.75mm greater due to the increased side wall height - the overall tyre diameter however will be greater by twice that...cause there's another side wall at the top! :p
 
Resurrecting this thread rather than starting new… I’m now needing two new tyres for my Tiguan and looking for something that will perform better than the OEM tyres off-road when needed.

Ive seen some recommendations for Falcon and Michelin, any others to consider?

Next question is could I get away with the AW on the fronts only leaving the OEM’s on the back? I suppose two issues, one being safety (although there’s lots of tread left) and two being will I get rubbish off road capability from only two or just enough to get out of a scrape?
 
I have Bridgestone Duellers on my Tiguan. No complaints, but my off road driving is limited to the occasional farm track.
