Christ he's huge next to the Argocat!I have a shikoku inu, had to bring him over from Italy. Genetically they are largely unaltered due to the uncommonness of them. But they are a deer and boar tracking dog dating back to early Japanese hunters. Fantastic natural ability and I've had him track 2 deer so far, still learning but so am I, also great with the family ad he is our pet first and foremost.

There is a breeder of another uncommon hunting breed in Scotland, they have Louisiana catahoula leopard dogs which are well worth a look
couldn't agree more, im no expert trainer and in terms of "deer work" my dog is just using his natural ability with guidance when things go right or wrongIt's an obvious thing to say but if you use a breed that is not bred for tracking deer/game then you are going to make the job harder for yourself, I have found that dogs with the right breeding only need training for sit, stay, hand commands etc, the rest is done on instinct
I thought if you want an American Tracking dog the Catahoula would be the choice . I woulnt personally put my hopes on the four breeds mentioned personally . I do know a breeder of Catahoula and they have some ready to go .Hello all,
My tracking dog has become a bit too old for the job and am looking for a new companion to take up the mantle.
My previous hound is a Romanian Mioritic Shepherd (rather unorthodox I know).
Whilst in the states this year I came across the Blue Lacy breed (state dog of Texas) and short of bringing one over with me on a flight I wondered if there were any Blue Lacy breeders or anyone who has puppies now or in the future they would be willing to point me in the direction of.
Failing acquiring the Lacy I would be interested in suggestions for another dog breed... Despite their prowess Labs, GWP and spaniels are out of the mixer for me, I'd like something a bit more unique.
Below are the list of breeds I am considering so if anyone has any suggestions of others or knowledge of the below it would be much appreciated:
- Cane Corse
- English Mastiff
- Great Dane
- Staffy
Aye, only hot tracking. Have some experience as have trained my Mioritic to do it. Took some work mind but he's a star now. If I was going to get a cold trail dog I agree, absolutely wouldn't be trying to rock the boat! Are you hot tracking or 12hrs plus. You seemingly want to complicate thinks with rare breeds. Hey that's fine. If your hot tracking christ you train a Yorky to do it. If its 12 hrs plus get a dog breed to do the task and train the he'll out of it.

Personally I prefer Labs , awesome in near enough any role tracking , retrieving , guide dogs , sniffer dogs , medical alert dogs and of course the most popular pet dog
Damn fine dog you have their Nick... even for a Redcoat!20 month old Luca on the back of a quad heading out for his 4th hot track. 70m, curving downhill, with a couch (copious bleeding visible ) then found dead 10m further. Conditions were thick bracken and brambles. Shot placement was 6.5 Swedish 140 grn liver shot, quartering frontal shot, just too far back.
The dog knew full where he was going and what to expect, hence the slightly deranged expression!
Regards Nick.
I just came across this tracking video, might interest some, all in German but she is a fit lass.
how many have you trained of both types Nick? It's an obvious thing to say but if you use a breed that is not bred for tracking deer/game then you are going to make the job harder for yourself, I have found that dogs with the right breeding only need training for sit, stay, hand commands etc, the rest is done on instinct

5 of the former and just 1 of the latter, so only a straw poll and I might have been unlucky. Mine weren't specialist deer dogs, 2 cockers, 1 lab and two GWPs. The Patterdale terrier was not a success..how many have you trained of both types Nick?
