Urban fox problem, advise please

Are these moderated .410's really so quiet? I have never heard one..

I could not really tell much difference between an El Chimbo .410 and Mossberg 500 Hushpower .410 when pulling the trigger. I must try shooting them with a witness listening out and assessing from some distance away.

I was using 3" and 2.5" standard loads rather than subs though. And the Mossberg does not have the full barrel length moderator of the Baikal single barrel.

I run a pest control company in south-west London, I have some scoot in the office which you are welcome to come and collect, no charge.Just PM for address

Agree .22 eley sub or better still a magtech , dog biscuits on lawn downward head shot from suitable second floor window. The thud will the noisiest bit. Have strong black rubble sack to hand. Do some sighting in shots first to ensure spot on bullet placement.

I work for a urban fox control company I would say you have a few choices shooting is a option if you have the correct insurance cover. Cage trap is a good way to go. I have found scoot and the electronic fox scares don't work on most urban foxes but give it a try you have nothing to loose. If all else fails give me a pm and I'll see what we can do to help. All the best Adrian

Thanks everyone for all the help and some very generous offers, I have got some SCOOT and will give it a try first before I engage some of the alternative suggestions offered

The .410 " Hushpower " folding (genuine one) ,moderator all the way from muzzle to hammer, with subs is inaudible on firing. :tiphat:

Do you happen to know what the 20 bore o/u hushpower is like? That has a full length moderator but then you have the extra oomph of the 20 bore. My Mossberg is a genuine Hushpower made one, or were you using "genuine" as in "original"?

Alan

No just a generalisation on oomph for the job , I've not used either a 20g or .410 hush power so not in a position to comment on noise attenuation .
Hopefully getting a shot of a moderated 20g shortly for beside some housing to reduce noise for a particular job so keen to see how it fairs.

well I have to say any hushpower 410 I have seen is nothing like as quiet as a well moderated bolt action 22 with subs

410 hushpower - YouTube

see for yourself

I would also choose the .22 for absolute precision and putting all its energy exactly where you want it.
baited area, soft ground, elevated position from inside, barely open window, solid rest/position, red rear bike light illuminating the area

use a spare iphone aimed at the site and one of the free phone to phone video apps to give you a video feed on the site

I took two out of the garden inside 3months and was fox free for 18m straight.
starting to come back so i will be back on a late shift soon!

Did you ever sort this? Laughing at some of he non London folks just saying shoot it Can just imagine the chaos from all sides if you did that casually.

Trick is not to do it casually.
Proper planning and the correct kit will mean nobody will know what's happened.

Guessing you never lived in London even with paperwork, notification and such like there would be such a fuss you wouldn't believe. All for a mangy fox. Can't even shoot a pigeon in your garden with an air rifle without neighbours getting the hump.

What paperwork? You have your licence for pest control
Who else and why do you have to notify?
I frequently shoot pigeons in Edinburgh with no comment and believe me my springer is louder than my .22
Also how do you think pest controllers take care of foxes?
Not all use traps, at a guess I would say more would be likely to use .22s
There was a programme on a few years ago called Fox Wars and that's what the pest controller used.

lived in london for 3 years
shot numerous things in my garden
have shot numerous foxes in my and other people's
never been seen either shooting or retrieving quarry, never had a complaint or had any "chaos"

why would there be chaos? we are not using unmoderated .270s!

people do this for a job without fuss.
