Used 22-250 Advice

Hi, I am looking to buy my first 22-250 and set it up for night time foxing. I use a Sako .223 at the moment and I’ll use that for daytime. I reload my own ammo.
my local rfd will not stock any used 22-250 and will only sell new and suggested I consider 220 swift instead??? The general advice seems to be..buy new or only buy used if I can shoot it before buying. I think that’s good advice but there are some good guns on guntrader but too far away for me to try out and not all RFDs have a shooting facility. any views on this??

I bought my .22/250 second hand, privately I might add, I asked lots of questions regarding condition and performance before driving from Northumberland to Derbyshire to test fire and collect. Personally, I think thats very good advice you've had for buying any rifle, if you don't know the history, are able to try or be provided with a guarantee of some sort, either leave it or take a chance, or buy very cheap and stick a new barrel on (mines currently having its third fitted)

22-250 runs a lot hotter / faster than most foxing rifles, used, If not a known quantity, swerve unless able to shoot a group with it. Just what I would do.

I'd be very very cautious about buying a vermin speeds calibre rifle second hand from a gun dealer.
In fact I just plain wouldn't.

Very low miles ,one careful elderly lady owner , who has torn the life out of the clutch and drove everywhere in second gear pinned to the floor and not.had it serviced once.

Yes. There’s a good gun on guntrader. 2022. Under 100 rounds guaranteed….owner never ever took the moderator off. Barrel is pitted and corrosion to thread At muzzle!,

22/250 is an excellent round, my favourite for foxes but a barrel burner for sure. Ultimately the price you pay needs to reflect the risk of needing a new barrel unless you can bore scope it and shoot it. Personally I would find a donor action at a sensible price and be prepared to stick a new barrel on it if needed. There is a nice Sako in Glasgow that would fit the bill and at £495 would not be out of the way even after a re barrel compared to a new rifle

Swift is just as much as a barrel burner. They (local rfd) didn't just happen to have a shiny new 220 Swift in stock, perchance?

my thoughts for what they are worth: buy new. you will know its history from day one and have sole control of how its used ,cleaned,moderator off/on etc .used rifles are a gamble and used 22-250 are more so.

Ha!..no he didn’t. I did consider it briefly but there are not many about and cases for reloading are 3 time the price of 22-250.

Just got an email from Gary regarding the Sako in Glasgow…..21” barrel, 1:14 twist. I have asked him if they will take it back if it won’t shoot a decent group. Thanks for the tip….I like Sako…I have a Sako S491 in .223..heavy barrel…love it!

Lots of talk of the calibre being a barrel burner, all my barrels have gone well into a few 1000's for round count, its how you treat the barrel when you're shooting it, if you like to shoot until the barrel glows you're going to have problems with any rifle

For info’…2 RFDs. One in Edinburgh and one in Glasgow have confirmed they will take the gun back if it won’t shoot a decent group. That’ll do for me

Get the seller to shoot a group in front of you, they are used to the handling better than a buyer.

It would be the 14 twist that would bother me the most at this time in history . My 12 twist will run 50 copper but i wouldn't be sure about a 14 doing that !
We will all be shooting the faster twist rate guns soon enough to be careful of what we buy now or be prepared to re-barrel soon enough

Hi, that’s a very fair offer. Both the Weatherbys look fine but I love the Sako in stainless steel…….but my piggy bank is hardly rattling as my wife needs to change her car! ..my variation is in with the police in Dumfries and they are usually pretty quick. I’ll try get up next week. Regards! Richard
