Variation wait (yawn!)

Wouldn't it be great if when you sent in your variation request, you got an automated email back confirming receipt and giving a rough steer on current waiting / processing time?
Pretty easy to set up an automated email. Only downside I can see is some forces may not want to advertise it if they were not coping well.
Bad idea, or too sensible to happen?

Best I have had was just over a week, worst was five months plus.
Latest is a 1-4-1 which I sent in three weeks ago.
I would be quite happy if they gave me a rough steer, would save me stalking the postie each morning!
Would appreciate just having a timeframe in mind, rather than literally could be any day, worst case into next year!

Suffolk exemplary as always (in my personal experience). License posted to them on the 5th, returned in my hand today, I was starting to panic as ammo stocks were dwindling but I needn’t have.
