Vehicle advice please.

Well, for a start, I will NEVER own another Landrover. After having 4 I`ve given up on the utter piles of pooh.

So, I`m back with Mitsubishi, a Shogun sport to be precise, which is basically an L200 with a tailgate.
Very nice it is too.

The worst land rover I had was recovered on the back of a breakdown truck ten times , from brand new it's first time was at 2746 miles and after that it never made made it between services without having to go in for some sort of warranty work !

I run a landcruiser amazon now , just done 200000 miles of trouble free motoring.

shall I go on ?

but are they any good off road?
the new toybota version pops a driveshaft out if the wheel is asked to articulate to about half the amount a standard Disco4 will,
one lad on our shoot was keen to show how good his mitsi was off road, when someone got stuck on a grass field in a 2wd, he put a rope on but couldnt get himself onto the track never mind pull anyone else,

Im sure every manufacturer turns out a friday car from time to time but the garage should sort it or swap it,

The single largest factor in off road ability is tyres, you can fit any tyres you like on any 4x4 within reason , weight is probably the next factor followed by ground clearance.

same tyres , my amazon will go anywhere a disco 4 will go.(proven) (so far)

I've had two so called Friday cars , both have needed an engine and two gearboxes and the lack of service I received from LR was truly shocking !

Im led to believe that the newer stuff is better built although I hired a disco four last year with 600 miles that needed to be changed due to faults?

Also the LR stuff is overpriced, playing on a name they no longer deserve.

Best off road vehicles I ever had were Daihatsu Fourtracks.
Now run a LR Discovery, because it does both jobs - family car and farm work vehicle. Not as good as the daihatsu off road though.

Sorry to thread hijack, but other than the Hilux Surf (just don't like the look of it!) anyone know a pick up with a sliding back window, as well as shooting kit, I need to fit a 6 or 7 foot rod holdall in it for my carp fishing.

vitara 2l diesel,

2"lift kit

will go just about anywhere,

love vits, bits are cheap and easy to come by, over the last 10 years i have had 4, largest door windows on the market, fit some free wheeling auto hubs and some nice at's, fuels not bad, good room for the wife and kids as well as the dogs. fold the back seats down and you have a large area for the blood tray and the dogs etc.

my old one thats now back home in bonnie scotland.

tackb your a bitter little lady on this one ! Here speaks a man with true experience for you , I own / drive 6 landrovers , a disco and 5 defenders . One of them recently clocking over 210 ,000 miles . There's a reason why we still have them , because no one else makes anything to compete with them in my opinion .
They are better off road ,
1. all the jap stuff is using a suspension system invented 3 century's ago ( leaf springs ) these WILL snap , I've seen it happen ! And they don't articulate ! Meaning you'll get cross axles in deep ruts !

2.due to a landrover being made of aluminium , it's much lighter than the competitors , meaning a lower gross weight , ergo you can carry a bigger payload legally as less of your gross weight is used by the vehicle .

3. Landys are classless , you could be a farmer or the queen in a defender , lets be honest what vehicle do you normally see your friendly local pikeys in ? You got it ! The chromed up pickup ! , trust is an important factor in our business when you turn up at a customers .

4.you can still service the current defender by yourself .

5. I agree its pricey , but they hold thier money bloody well , I should know , I bought another one last year ! How many jap pickups built in the 90s could still fetch over 5 k ?!

6.your toyota amazon will not match a disco 4 offroad buddy , it's like comparing the latest iMac to a house brick , you could be an incompetent offroad driver and still use the disco4 offroad easily . It's on board system is great .

If I'm honest I think if company's like Toyota were still turning out a similar car to the hilux 10 years ago , land rover would be in trouble , but there's no real competition , sure the japs are great for chucking a few dead deer in the back and running off down a stones track , but try towing 40 sheep across muddy Wealden clay , that's offroad ability !

Thanks guys, any common or serious problems to consider on the Ford Ranger?

Common problems yes, serious problems no.

On the 2.5 TD mk1 & mk2....

Leafsprings: you will break them - don't buy the ford ones as replacements, get some dedicated aftermarket (ironman, old man emu, etc) ones when the time comes. It'll ride better on road, flex better offroad, and they won't break like the originals seem to.

Occasional starting problems: can be traced to the ignition switch usually - a new one is £100 or if you're handy with a soldering iron can be fixed in 20 mins on the cheap.

Exhaust manifold: these occasionally become warped - Ford sell an upgraded gasket thats about four times as thick as the original - problem diagnosed by a "whistle" whilst engine's under load.

Gearbox: use fifth gear sparingly when you're towing - they made it out of toffee for some reason, but if you don't put it under stress it won't give you any bother.

I run an old V reg mk1 and have for quite a while. It's worked hard daily, four wheel drive, towing etc and doesn't get babied. They're great trucks and much underated, you can buy one for a lot less than the equivalent Toyota or similar. There's no ECU under the bonnet, the engine's all mechanical and fixable therefore by a good back yard mechanic if needs be. Keep them serviced (I replace ALL fluids annually) and they'll keep on going.

One thing I would say is to make sure you get one with ABS. Mine doesn't have this and wet tarmac with mud terrain tyres can make for an interesting stopping experience sometimes!

1 , my landcruiser is on coil springs and hydraulics ?
2, check out the manufactures data , I did and I'm lighter than a disco
3, the pikeys round my way are in discos now?
4, I service my own car
5, they are over priced
6, yes it will

i have very good reason to be bitter , they were the worst cars I ever had the misfortune to own and the service was truly shocking ! Do a quick google of landrover reliability as I can't be bothered to try and explain , I have owned both LR and jap 4x4s so speak with experience.

show me an 05 range rover that's done 200k and everything still works !

Im a crane engineer by trade and once dragged a 40ton crane with my landcruiser , the customers fitter tried back in there yard with there pumped up off road 90 , snapped a half shaft !

Oh and did I mention that 90s are cold uncomfortable draughty slow uneconomical cramped ..........

A lot of landrover owners have "One life live it" stencilled on their back windows.
WHAT THEY REALLY MEAN IS 1 LIFE LIVE IT UNDER THE BLOODY BONNET!

i've had two daihatsu F20's many years ago very agricultural!
a suziki samuria long wheelbase agricultural and not really a family car
td5 discovery h0rse**** wouldn't touch another !
toyota surf 2.4td awesome bullet proof superb offroad due to coil springs all-round i had the 2.4td which was quite good on juice but a bit underpowered so go for 3 litre
had 2 l200's animal and warrior good on road useless off and wouldn't have another
currently running a d22 navarra x reg pretty good on juice and ok off-road but its going this year and i'm getting another surf but a 3litre
my dads had 2 shoguns both very good and a mitsu challenger which he also likes
personally i'd go for as low a mileage surf as you can afford
hope some of this helps
