Vets again

My wife took our 2 dogs to the vets again yesterday, The young one for its second jab of some new strain of Parvo or Noro which the vet said she needed a couple of weeks ago when she went for her annual booster, Anyway when she got there the older dog got her booster and my wife asked about the younger dogs second jab for this new strain thing and the vet said she didn't need this so called new strain booster and didn't really know anything about it so no extra charge but £160 to pay for the 2 boosters, I must point out it was the same practice but different vet, The vet then said when will you be getting the the younger dog spayed because if you don't she is at greater chance of cancers etc etc, I have no plans to breed this bitch but she is an absolutely adorable dog and with our other bitch being old now I'm not ruling it out so I can have a pup off her and we have had a number of people ask because of her friendly and playful nature when were down the park with other dog walkers if we have considered breading her, Why do the vets promote spaying a healthy dog, Is it really in the dogs interest, We had our last 2 spayed very young because one had a heart murma and the one we still have had a Hernia both diagnosed on routine health checks very young so we followed the vets advice.

Next thing was the vet says the older dog needs dental treatment and looking at her teeth this will cost anything from £700 because of the bracket she will fall in, Apparently £700 for so many teeth, then £1000 then upwards but apparently this falls into groups and depending on amount but it will definitely be upwards of £700, Our last old bitch that died a couple of year ago at 15 and died not long after having dental treatment so the wife is a little sceptical and doesn't want to put her through this when she seems fine, She eats fine, sleeps fine and appears perfectly healthy for a nearly 14yr old, If she starts showing signs of being poorly we will spend whatever it cost.
After this booster fiasco where one says she needed a second jab for this new strain and the other not knowing anything about a new strain I am seriously thinking about changing vets as it's clear they are just trying to get whatever they can out of us.

As ABBA sang MONEY MONEY MONEY 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Shop around
Now that a vet has seen the dog and specified dental work phone about, tell them she’s seen a vet already so doesn’t need a consultation and ask specifically about quotes for the work required

I’ve just been through this
Quoted £2000. Ended up paying £500

And that does sum up the problem we often face - including on here. Medical care is expensive but many people seem to think that care should be cheap because we love animals.

Agreed. Taking dental work as an example, my daughter has issues, the NHS waiting list is years long. Private estimate to remove 2 x baby teeth £1,200 other work required over the next 2 years brings the total up to nearly £4K

Neuter - the long standing advice was to spay to reduce mammary tumours and pyometra (womb infection). While these can be serious, they are treatable so there is a now a bit of a move away from this and there has been a recent report on the routine neutering of dogs and cats. If you might want a litter - leave her entire.
Vaccines - this sounds like the L2 v L4 for leptospirosis. L4 is recommended, which is the newer vaccine.
Dental - tricky. I've seen dogs with disgusting mouths live full lives, I've also seen how much they improve after removing diseased teeth. It can take a couple of hours to do, those teeth are tough to remove sometimes and it has to be under full anaesthetic. The ads you see for conscious scaling are a con

Just had my dogs bollocks off as we have 5 bitches! long story but the snip was£162 all in . Asked if the would do his canine teeth at the same time as there was a bit of tartar buildup on them . They didn’t do them during the opp but at his post opp check the vet did them with a pair of pliers only took a minute and no charge 👍

Concur - my wife had a similar issue with our vets when we acquired our last 2 Vizslas - one had L$, the other (younger) only L2. Two jabs to "restart" protection with both now on L4.

Could be worse with the jab muddle up.
Many years ago my wife and I was due our holiday jabs and when we see the nurse she insisted we had them along with something else.
I turned out my brother and his wife had also booked for holiday jabs but for a different part of the world and they got both sets.
He did think at the time he was getting a lot.
😂😂
I guess it's called human error.

I’m sure you e seen my posts about vets in the past , including the ones about my lurchers teeth.

Can you explain such a vast difference in costs between vets in East Lothian and vets in the Borders ?

It beggars belief and reinforces a culture of money first and as much as possible.

To recount, vets up here , 12 yr old lurcher. Quoted for 7 teeth out. Several vets ( all had to be coerced into quoting without a consultation fee btw). Costs between £1700 and £2000. ( several vets remember)

Works completed in the borders. 12 teeth out plus aftercare plus puppy initial health check puppy pack and worming for my 3 dogs

£570

As I said. Beggars belief.

To add. 1 weeks antibiotics up here £145. Down there £22

Making money isn't bad. Making money by over-charging and/or recommending procedures that aren't needed is verging on the criminal.
I do believe it's all the local vet practices being taken over by big firms. The vets I'm sure will have animals' interests at heart, but the big companies are pretty removed from that and their interest is money. It's only business (as the Mafia would say). So I expect that the practice and vets have targets to reach. Stands to reason. When a local practice, it had to support a vet or two, a nurse or two and a receptionist or two. Now, there's a big company it has to support too.

It's happening with dentists too. But that's another story.

My neighbour is a vet, although Garath has just moved so no longer my neighbour as such.
Myself and an old boy over the other side of the lane shared a common interest in working dogs, and the three of us had a chance meeting in the lane at the bottom of Gareth's driveway, I remember clearly the day... Jack said to Gareth "I bet it's lovely visiting all those farms and treating the cattle and sheep" Gareth's blunt reply was "No money in treating them, we only do small animals that's where the profit is" :norty:

If you didn’t go to the vets in the first place for jabs that your dogs don’t need, then you wouldn’t be in this situation where the vet has you worrying(if I’m coming across as a prick, I’m not meant to be 👍)

while I am all for paying a fair price for the job, I am told by a vet friend that the current rend for certain things are just money makers, the so called 'gold standard'. were old school vets just lead standard? or advice certain regular treatments 'just in case' (their account was getting low). the difference in cost for some meds in also a joke. drops for my wife's dogs eyes = 22 quid, just so happened I had a touch of conjunctivitis a couple of weeks later... told to use eye drops and got given the exact same drops in same strength make packaging etc for 8 quid!

todays bill was 31/2 k as the 18 month old springer lab mongrel had decided two pairs of the wifes knickers were tasty and they had lodged inside him!

Half the stuff I use on my dogs comes from the chemist .
