Vicars Game not taking Roe

Was dropping off a Roe Doe today at Vicars Game and told that today was the last day for taking in Roe currently.
Just a heads up in case anyone is heading over there. Maybe ring them first.

There is a reason why but not good and that was my first comment to them.
Really not helping the venison market and getting numbers down either.

All roe they take is exported. It has to be skinned and frozen.
If skinning resource is scarce it will be aimed at the more profitable fallow for restaurant trade.
If freezer space is limited it can’t be stored until the volume require is reached
It’s a business - head to Oakland 6 miles down the road. No doubt you’ll take your fallow too which will result in a price rise at Vicars

It’s annoying but we are relatively blessed with 2 such dealers close by

Well its not that simple. They have customers with accounts that have used them for various reasons for years. Simply not using them is a hassle or change that doesn’t suit everyone. That said it may be necessary to make a change.

This happened to me a few years back, been using the same gamedealer for the pheasants & partridges for years, used to drop them off on the way back from the shoot & at end of the season he’d give me a cheque for them which always came as a nice windfall.

Then one season he says he can’t take any more partridges as he’s got three freezers full in the barn & until they’ve been emptied he has no more room for them. He also mentions that whilst he’ll still take pheasants he’s only taking them from his regular customers, which I’m grateful for.

Then at the end of the season I call by expecting a cheque only to be told that although the account is in debit he’ll write it off - apparently at the start of the season they were paying for birds but by the end they were charging to take them away.

Next season was the same, started off paying for birds but then paying pennies before starting to charge to take them. That was last season for that shoot, but for other reasons involving DEFRA…

people need to find an out let or accept if they dont eat it, its a waste product of a hobby.
game dealers need a out let and that doesnt seem to exist at present

There is an increasing likelihood that the only meaningful way forward in a reduction of a given herd of fallow, that is seriously impacting a concerned landowner, is for the deerstalker to insist upon an agreed carcass disposal mechanism that may well be no more than a 9ft hole in the ground and allied commitment to suitable backfill.

And before we are subjected to the crass and wholly unrealistic insistance by certain SD members that deerstalkers without access to a Game Dealer must become a registered Small Food Business, and demonstrate proficiency in both butchery and marketing, let me make clear this is not what the DEFRA consultation on deer management would have concluded had the Department listened to and acted upon our submissions.

I never have any issues in offloading venison - admittedly I’m only taking 40 cwd over the winter, but that still equates to 250kg of meat.
If you aren’t culling hundreds then vac pack it and offer it down the pub, trade for something else or just give it to folks who are having a tough time and need a hand.

vicars game have gone down hill since alan haywood and his brother sold it on, they were decent people to deal with .cant say anything about who owns it now as i no longer stalk so nothing to take any way.

This 100% nobody likes leaving carcasses but if there’s too many deer in an area and no outlet there’s really not much choice

They do pick and choose when and what they will take. I have been paid £60 for a fallow spiker one month and then offered £25 the next.
For me it’s not worth the diesel and I would rather give what I shoot away for nothing than get paid a derisory amount of money for a decent carcass that they will sell on for good money - the £ for effort doesn’t add up.
