Update via BASC Central Team:

We were recently made aware that the West Mercia Police will be transitioning to a new case management system on 17 March. This changeover is specifically designed to enhance operations. While the online process for certificate holders will remain unchanged, there will be an adjustment period to improve overall efficiency. Additionally, all staff members will undergo a comprehensive IT upgrade, which will require some time to adapt. During this transition, there may be delays in processing variations and new grants. The primary focus will be on ensuring renewals are processed without expiration. Normal operations are expected to resume within two weeks after the system upgrade.

Please note: Phone inquiries may be limited during this period and West Mercia Police has asked for non-urgent enquiries to be postponed until April, when they aim to return to business as usual.

That’s a cheeky statement, how can they state that phone inquiries will be delayed when they are basically non existent? The phone lines are only open for one hour a day and there is often a 30 min wait to speak to anyone.

🤞A public sector IT upgrade !
What can possibly go wrong ?

Usually get a really good service from West Mercia. Co term renewal due in Oct so watching this with much interest.

I can’t fault west Mercia never had an issue with them in the last 15 years they always had a sensible and common sense approach to firearms and conditions was talking to them at the bss and they were saying that they are doing there best with an outdated system so this upgrade mean things are only going to get better for us shooters it must be hard for them for the people who are constantly putting in for variations one after another where as I think I’ve done 5 in the last 15 years look forward to seeing there service get even better

no not at all but just think how much time goes in for a variation and if some one is doing that 15 times a year it will strain a strained system even more I think the system does need changing ie if you sell a 243 you can just go and buy another without variating every time but unfortunately this is not the case

Been waiting nearly 14 weeks for a variation so I guess I'll be waiting a good while longer now 😅

To be fair, the phone lines are open as follows now:

  • December: 11am to 12pm, and 2pm to 3pm
  • January 2025: 10am to 12pm, and 2pm to 4pm
  • February: 9.30am to 12pm, and 2pm to 4pm
  • March: 9.30am to 12pm, and 1pm to 5pm
I've had great success over the past few weeks in contacting them. never on hold for more than 5 mins.

Just had a firtle with the calculator, someone puts in 15 variations over a year, 52 weeks in a year, divide by 15 variations, = 1 every 3.4 weeks, or 1 every 24.3 days,
If that were the case, I'm pretty sure someone would be having a word in their shell like.
