West Yorkshire licensing

Hi all, I hope this is the correct place to post this question...

I'm wanting to apply for my FAC this year and having heard how difficult it can be here in West Yorkshire to have anything granted, I wondered if there were any bits of advice/ recommendations on shooting clubs in the area where I should join to help with my application. As I don't have land to shoot on here in Yorkshire I imagine joining a club is the only way I would have anything granted at the moment.

Thanks all.

You will, I hope, forgive my impertinence.

You are 'wanting' to apply for your FAC.
You don't have any land to shoot on - not everyone does.
You do not belong to any Club - not everyone does.

May I ask, what it is you want a firearm for?

It is a question that any FLO, will seek to explore.

I'm West Yorkshire and you defo need to join a club, even if ypu had land they would be looking at your ability to evidence safe handling and probably want mentors. Lots of clubs around, look at where are you based and find one local to you that is easiest to get to so more likely to attend

You'll need to do your probation visitS and then apply to be a full member before you can apply for your FAC and it makes sense to do so as You'll learn plenty along the way at your club to support your knowledge of the sport and applying for your FAC

Thats a significant change since they never used to issue a closed certificate. Maybe there is another Yorkshire - east riding ?

I haven't started my application yet, that's what I meant by wanting to apply this year. Ultimately I'd like to help with pest control, but equally enjoy target shooting. I've been shooting for around 14 years now but have never held an FAC. I'd like a firearm to further my knowledge, skills etc.

Thank you, very helpful.

I've enquired at a couple of clubs but there don't seem to be many that offer center fire ranges.

So you think it's unlikely that I'll have it granted inside of my probationary period?

Hi, yes unlikely they will issue in a probationary period.

If you want to do pest control do you have permission over any land at all? As this will be needed to get that condition

Where abouts are you based?, within 15miles of Wakefield there are several clubs, two small bore (Elland and Wakefield) but will have additional trips booked at other ranges to support centrefire usage, Yorkshire shooting centre at Mirfield has a 100yd centre fire range as well as a 25yd indoor small bore range,
Diggle over at Oldham is fantastic for centre fire with up to 1000yd range but further away and be easier to do your probationary stuff at a more local club

Hi, Mirfield is one that has been on my radar. It definitely seems worth a visit.

I have some land that I can get permission on - don't yet have any kind of formal arrangement but it's not nearby. I can see that being an issue of West Yorkshire are as difficult as I've heard they are.

Thanks for all your help by the way - I really appreciate it 👍

Joining a club won’t “help with your application”. If you don’t have a field shooting use for firearms, then joining a club is REQUIRED for you to get a FAC.

You will need to be a full member. Then add the time between club committee meetings and the time it takes for the police to look at your club membership request…. you won’t be getting a FAC this year.

If you apply via a club, you will only be able to shoot on approved shooting ranges. No pest control, no field shooting. For that, you need a separate good reason with land permission, paid hunting trips or a request from a holder of shooting rights for you to do pest control.
