What 6.5

Been accepted for a 6.5, was thinking of the following
Tikka. 6.5 creedmoor ctr
Tikka t3x super varmint 6.5x55
Any opinions would be appreciated, also considering a 6.5 /284, but put off by not many rounds before needing a rebarrel

Do you reload? If not check out how easy it is to get factory ammo locally and use that as a factor. In real life shooting they’ll all do what we need.

A tikka super varmint in any calibre is heavy.

For me its 6.5x55 in a lighter rifle. I would not dismiss a 6.5 creedmore . I had a tikka t3 rebarreled to a .308 by Brock &Norris to a lightweight stalking rifle .
Looking at doing that again in 6.5x55 or creedmore same barrel and stock spec as the .308

what are you wanting it for? both those rifles are pretty heavy, well suited for target, gongs etc but may not be the best if you're walk and stalk, or on the hill all the time. I had a tikka super varmint once, very accurate but carrying it around all the time wasn't comfy so it got swapped. Calibre wise, virtually nothing between the creedmoor, 260 and 6.5x55 especially if you reload.

Will be used as a truck gun, and target, so weight will not be an issue
well either model would be fine then, Id try and handle both see which you prefer. Re the calibre, both those rifles come in 20" and 24" (on special order I think?), you might want to have a think about which cartridge would perform best in your chosen barrel length. Ive no experience of the 6.5x284 but would ask whether you'll see any ballistic benefit in a shorter barrel, other than chucking flames out the front of the mod!

I guess it depends on your priorities. If you are chasing numbers then go for the biggest case capacity, as you state downside is barrel life but I guess that depends on how you use the rifle, if you are shooting strings of shots weekly then the 6.5x284 might be a tad hot. If it’s primarily a stalking gun it’ll last decades. That being said you’ll get good performance out of the 24” barrel on a tikka varmint with the swede, I’m running a 26” barrel on mine with reloads and it’s pretty hot! Im not certain I want a 100gn bullet faster than 3400fps which is what I’m getting. Nothing runs far....

A creed comes into its own for the non home loader imo, abundant, stoutly loaded factory ammo.

Both the Tikkas I mentioned come in 24",but 6.5x55 will have to be a special order, and apparently it comes non Threaded, will have to find out on lead time and how much to get it Threaded, trouble is with this lock down can't go nowhere to have a look at some

For me its the 6.5 x 55, looked at the Creedmore but settled on the Swede, why i cant really say if im honest just fell in love with it after trying both! My advise for what its worth would be to try and find mates with these calibers and give them a try!
I found after reading up on them both i found myself getting pulled from one to the other so i dimissed all the info and settled on what felt right for me!

Hope this helps.

Find a nice rifle that you like, that fits you, that is the sort of money you want to pay. Like it? then look at what calibre it is. Provided it shoots a 100 to 150 gn bullet at a muzzle velocity of 2600 to just under 3,000 it will be good for all UK deer stalking. Make an agreement with the seller and sort out your variation. Calibre and in particular cartridge is very much a secondary consideration when choosing a rifle, even more so if you reload.

Thanks for that but I made my mind up a while ago, to get a 6.5 creedmoor, but just reading of the other 6.5 available, has made me think, but with this lock down can't get to see any,

I had the same dilemma recently and was set on a swede, but then I started doing a bit more target shooting and read up on the creedmoors in the US, I asked around and it seemed to be commonly available so went with the CM, factory load data is a bit of a pain as it’s a mix of US bullets and Euro powders but there’s a lot of data on the web. So far I’m happy with my choice.

I will say - if I had found the right rifle in 6.5x55 I would have gone with that and sure it would’ve done the same job!

a friend is running a 6.5x47 and there nothing in it really!

All 6.5s will chuck ammo at deer with roughly the same speed and accuracy at normal stalking ranges... If you're going to shoot statics with the same rifle, then it's more about the scope than the cartridge.

If I were starting again, I'd have a good long look at the 6.5 Creedmoor, but my Sako 75 6.5x55 is showing no signs of accuracy dropping off, and when it does I'll just rebarrel.

I have my ammo loaded by HPS Target Rifles and the Hornady 143gr ELD-X bullets are leaving the barrel at 2,700fps, which is good enough to play at properly at 600yds on statics.

I'd go further, but don't have a 20MOA picatinny and the Z6i 3-18x50 doesn't have enough clicks to dial in out to >1,000yds, so if book a lane on Stickledown, I'll just get p*ssed off that I need to stop before anyone else...!!!

In short, my advice, for what it's worth, is to wait for lockdown to finish and go handle a load of rifles which come in any of the 6.5mm cartridges to see what you like.

I've got a 6.5x47 and a 6.5-284. The 6.5x47 is a short compact rifle that I choose if I am likely to be in woodland and the distances to shoot deer are likely to be sub 200m. The 6.5-284 is more suited to shooting further out. So it depends on what you want it to do. Personally, if someone said to me you can only have one 6.5 then it would be the 6.5-284 because it will do everything and more than the smaller one. I don't worry how many shots I will get before a barrel is shot out because it's my recreational stalking rifle so I am using it that much and when I do I want to enjoy the accuracy and performance. I have shot a 25-06 out and few .270's out but a barrel is a consumable item. The other one to consider would be the 6.5 prc
