What are the benefits of having DSC 2 ?

you are implying that you will need dsc2 to stalk alone, yet If I was after other quarry I could go unaccompanied, no sense at al

Ah - I see.

I didn't make any statements about whether or not I thought it was a good idea - I just said I thought it was inevitable.

Though, as a matter of fact, if managed correctly, I do think it's a good idea.

I personally think that passing a firearms handling, safety and shooting test should be pre-requisite for getting an FAC (in the same way as passing a driving test is to get a driving licence). However, I then think that should be accompanied by an easing of the beaurocratic nonsense associated with actually obtaining and changing individual firearms. Pass a stringent test, get cleared for certain calibre classes (as with different class of vehicle licence), then be allowed to buy and change freely after that (as with vehicles).

I see no particularly good reason why the whole system can't be explicitly modelled and adminstered on vehicle licencing.

And then, if you are planning to sell meat into the human food chain, you should be required to pass the additional carcasse handling and food hygene components of the existing DSCs.

Sadly I have to agree

A training course in shooting and firearms should be a prerequisit of a FAC

I know its big brother but sadly as the sport moves away from people braught up with guns to people who lived in the town their whole life and fancy a go, something needs to ensure we dont all get screwed over by some idiot later on.

DSC2 would still exist as thats dear stalking relevent.

Rifel safety not being the sole issue as thers also stalking, field craft, graloching and meet inspection.

At the risk of going off at a tangent---- and on the basis that all knowledge can be good, its not such a bad idea DSC 1 OR 2.However issue someone a certificate for anything, driving a 360,license to drive ,DSC ,YOU CREATE AN INSTANT EXPERT ! You tick all the computer models going---"certificated" and that's it.As we all know experience gained in the field is the most important thing going. Not everyone can get this from early years with a seasoned pro so the training courses undoubtedly can help to give them a start. I am sure it will not be too long before it becomes mandatory as although rifle ownership and stalking as a sport is on the up, the numbers doing it will decline.Won't be long before the people and organisations who provide the courses dream up something new ,have a chat with the powers to be and HEY PRESTO we have a new certificate to earn, this will keep everyone busy and employed and render all previous certificates low grade. So to obtain stalking permissions (eg forestry commission)etc. You will have to do it. Re Gun handling etc, from what I have heard lately and after the last change in rules re Forestry Commission leases some holders of these lost them as believe it or not they failed the shooting test ! Too many users of rifles are only happy shooting off of a rail,a bi-pod,tri-pod or the like .And whilst I am not saying this is not a good idea for accuracy and a clean kill(which is obviously the most important thing after safety) they have lost the art of gun handling. I am all for using every tool and advance in technology in the box, but get the basics right first.

No you don't at all. You create a proven competent person. No more and no less!

I've just sent my portfolio off to BDS. I didn't plan to do the course but one of the guys who comes stalking with me offered his services as an AW. I never realised how much of a leap it would be from dsc1 to dsc 2!
Even after 18 years stalking I found the whole experience gratifyingly and you're never too old to learn something new.

I thought it was more to show what you have learnt rather than learning something new ? I thought there was no instruction?

RE Firearms handling, safety and shooting test should be pre-requisite for getting an FAC , it does seem to be fairly well self regulated already , if someone goes the target shooting only route they nearly always have to serve a probationary period with a club prior to applying for an FAC , with hunting / stalking first timers are restricted to certain approved land or usually small calibers , I don't have any stats for accidental injuries/deaths caused to third parties by firearms but I`d imagine its very low , particularly as the media love anything like that and it would make headline news.
Leave it as it is I say.
