What do people currently think about .222 Remington?

I've had my Tikka 595 in .222 for Christ it's that long I can't remember.
This little round can do a lot more than people give it credits for.
I normally shoot either 50 or 55gr from it and it makes me look good it's that accurate.
And to say it's on the way out is bollocks

Great plenty of choices , balletic tips etc for vermin , I personally run sako .222 50 ge soft pints through mine and it’s crazy accurate and at 18.50 a box doesn’t break the bank

It's 0.001 off being a great round!!. Seriously though, for foxing you can't go wrong with either a .222 or .223, I just have a preference for the .223.

If you fancy a .222 go for it. Ballistics very little difference with .223 Rem (probably not really noticeable in a factory sporter with factory ammo). In the UK often .222 Rems seem to attract a bit of a discount to .223s on the second hand market. Perhaps not quite so much ammo choice as .223 Rem but still probably not difficult to find ammo...

I'd be with Kalahari and get in a nice 527.

Hmmm …
If we’re talking about what’s on the shelf then .223 ammunition is far more plentiful. Some gunshops don’t stock .222 (which is SP only) but will always keep .223 FMJ and SP in. The ratio of .223 loadings to .222 will certainly never be as high as in the States because we can’t own semi-autos.

Secondhand rifles in .222 are far less popular so usually cheaper than the equivalent in .223.

One caveat worth raising is that .223’s often have much higher mileages on them than .222’s because of the availability of budget & military ammo. Some .223’s have had thousands of rounds through them at high rates of fire. It’s not uncommon to see 50 rounds go downrange in 10 minutes.
You can’t know this. It rarely happens with a .222 which is more expensive to feed, or you load for.

For that reason, unless the history was known I wouldn’t have a used .223 but would always buy new. With left-hand models there’s often no other option anyway so I’m perhaps stuck in that groove.

I really like the .222. I've never owned one but my regular shooting buddy has one and it's brilliant.

A few notable memories with his gun are beating a guy with an AI target rifle in a 200m competition, and taking out more foxes than I could even begin to count. I own a .223, there really is nothing in it. If you want a .222 then buy one, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

I too like the little scaled CZ527 action. I've had a few in various calibres, they've always been excellent guns.

Yes the 223 is more common

But ask yourself....what would you rather drive?

The car everyone else has....or the one they all look at as you fly by...?


Unless you particularly want to shoot past 400yds competitively and use 60+gr bullets then the .222 will do you proud

.222 BSA CF2 love it to bits would never sell it out to 223 although i have an open slot for one!!!!!!!

I have used both. Would prefer a 222, but being a lefty I have ended up with a 223. I am not sure I can tell the difference and suspect that if you took two identical rifles save for one was 222 and the 223 and shot them for a while I doubt many could tell the difference.

You can obviously tell their cases and ammo apart if side by side, but with the brass if it was head stamped and you didnt have a ruler, most people again would struggle to tell the difference.

Hi Everyone,

As a bit of fun I am tempted to do some running boar type target shooting competitions and my .308 T4 is far too heavy so I was thinking of getting a smaller, more nimble centrefire rifle. I have shot .223 a lot and so that would be an obvious choice but I have heard people say the .222 Remington was historically an even nicer little cartridge. However a lot of people view it as on its way out. I have browsed around and although the factory .222 ammo is more pricey, the second hand .222 rifles are a bit cheaper so cost wise there doesn't seem to be that much in it. So I was wondering what is the current opinion here about the little old .222 Remington?

Find a nice vintage Sako with medium or heavy barrel in 222 and make all haste to your running deer range and ENJOY!
