What made you smile today

One of my clients was accidentally locked into a police cell in a derelict station whilst we were on a building visit. An automatic locking cell door that had been accidentally left live by the force. The police had also lost the keys, spent hours looking in various stations, their on call locksmith failed to materialise. Eventually the police called the fire bridge to cut him out as his claustrophobia, the cold and my delight were getting the better of his spirit. As I felt in some way responsible (I suggested he entered for a picture) I stayed to keep him company and myself amused (pictures 1 & 2)… however it was his complete lack of any gratitude that tickled me (pictures 3 & 4).

At times I couldn’t breathe I was laughing so much. My pal (also client) wasn’t in a laughing mood, but I’m sure he’ll be able to look back with fond memories eventually.

Additional photographs of the firing lock on an adjacent cell (showing the button trigger), the cell (pre-debacle), and the general vibe of the abandoned old station (skanky). The door and jamb were double steel plated hardwood.

Putting this all back together at 5.30pm today after having taken the furniture off to stain it and then lacquer it over the last 72 hours.

An Italian that followed me home from Yorkshire in 2024. I collected it from my gunsmith on 2 January where it had been to have the stock lengthened to 15 5/8", the pistol grip re-shaped into a straight hand grip and then the chequering restored and the left barrel choke taken out to half choke. I asked him to not finish the stock after the work was done so I could stain it at home to get the extension piece to try and match.

A modern 1950s/1960s hammer gun, 70mm chambers, continental 27.5" barrels got for those "bring something different" odd days.

What's made me smile today? There's a simple answer to that question:- I ordered a new fishing rod for Dead Baiting for Pike. I just went to the door a while ago to smoke a fill of my favourite pipe and no sooner than I had lit my pipe the FedEx van pulled up and delivered my new rod! As I have nothing I need to do today I can feel a trip to the tackle shop for some frozen dead bait and a trip out to the canal to try to christen the new rod! And if I do manage to latch in to a pike that will put an even bigger smile on my face!:)
Have a good day Guys and Stay Safe whatever you are doing! :tiphat:

Coming home tonight I was held up by an elderly lady cyclist going very slowly, followed her for good 1/2 mile in town centre until she got to a pelican crossing where upon she signalled to turn right and did so.Couldn’t help but laugh but at least she was safe bless her

Last night a cry of "barn owl" came from our daughter in her room upstairs.

The field at the back of our house is frequented on occasion by a barn owl and it always creates a sense of excitement.

I spent some 15 minutes watching the owl quartering back and forth over the field, taking the occasions rest on a fence post or in a tree before moving on to other feeding spots.

Whilst trying to watch the bird for as long as possible, I opened the windows and and cold the 'clack' clack clack' of fallow bucks antlers clashing as they test their strength.

At first is was using a pair of Bushnell 10 x 50s and couldn't see much as it was approaching dusk. they're old and i suspect we relatively cheaper when we bought them in the US around 20 years ago. Then i went and got my Christmas present off the study desk, my new pair of Zeiss HD 8 x 42s.

What a difference they made to visibility in the half light, not only could i see the owl much better, but the fallow came into clear view.

Similar - stalking at last light yesterday, watching a barn owl quartering the property I was stalking. Majestic
We are really fortunate, we get a number of birds of prey/owls 'immediately' outside our windows, Barn, Little seen frequently. Tawney heard frequently seen once which was an odd event.

We have a balcony outside our bedroom with French doors on it and glass balustrading. We sleep with the doors open when its hot.

Last summer, we were woken in the middle of the night by something banging against the glass.

Padding out onto the balcony in the dark to work out what it was, turned, out to be a Tawny Owl. Caught it in a towel and lifted it up to the top of the balustrade, and when uncovered, it sat there for a few seconds before flying off. Magical moment and the only time in seven years of living here we have actually seen this frequently heard bird.

Of al the birds of prey i do love the owls.

This brought back the memory of my one night spent in an Eindhoven police cell December 22nd 1983.
Tip of the week. Always have your passport with you when abroad.

I have reloaded and restocked pretty much every chambering I have, all I have left to do is rattle up 100 .303’s and I’ll be fully stocked…ready for the warmer weather! Always a happy feeling….

On the family side, my daughter plays snare drum in two pretty well known pipe bands and was playing with Skerryvore on stage recently (link at the bottom), she literally had 3 blisters on one hand and 2 on the other from practicing. The crowd went wild when they were on stage as they played with light up stocks that made it look even better…a very proud moment.

She played the remembrance day marches last year and with the red hot chilli pipers the year before so is doing me proud.

My son plays the violin and guitar and although just for his own amusement he plays very well and I enjoy listening to him playing both in the background….the little sh*t has mastered songs I never managed…I listens to him playing the intro to Creed’s “six feet from the edge” and he was note perfect…very proud.

It’s the little things.

We went to the world Pipe Band Championships held 2024 near Glasgow, phenomenal sounds. I estimated 1,500 pipers & drummers were on the green together, it make the Edinburgh Tattoo seem tame.
