What Pickup ?

Wish they would do an X-class AMG with a big V8 in it. However, Mercedes have ruled it out.

Functionally the Nissan Navara is a great vehicle but there have been serious qc issues with underbody corrosion protection. Nissans resealed parts of my chassis as part of their "non-recall" recall without charge but I'm unimpressed about the areas of rust that they didn't remedy. The plate retaining the spare wheel rusted through a few months ago and the wheel dropped off (fortunately no one got hurt) and Nissan customer services were pretty dismissive about this stating that it "happens all the time". This is the third Nissan P/u that I've bought from new in the past 25 years and the first one that I've had issues with. To be frank I'd say avoid buying one until the qc issues and attitude problem at Nissan are sorted.

Never likely to happen whilst Renault has the controlling interest!

Say no. I would not spend that on a 2nd hand one, you could add a bit more and get a decent Hilux which although would be older would be better.

It’s still a Nissan underneath! Don’t rate my new Navara at all and can’t wait to get rid.
Yep. You are right. I blew up a D40 Navara's engine several years ago. F650 Super Duty, then? How about that?

I have had 4x4s for the last 35 years, Defenders, Discos, L200s and now a Ford Ranger which I love.

But can anyone here tell me why I should not buy a new Ssangyong Musso with 150,000 mile/seven year warranty. Just interested what you guys think or have hears about it.

Obsessed with my Isuzu Dmax great traction over ground my Navarra would have got me stuck in. I went manual I like to be in control over rough ground

Another point.. Auto or manual box and why ?

Deffo aif you tow a lot and it also makes driving in general less hassle. Have to say that between the previous 6 speed manual and current 8 speed ZF auto Amarok, I prefer the auto off-road as it lets you concentrate on the steering without having to faff around playing with the levers - just hit the off-road button and be prepared to drop the rear axle diff lock in if it gets really gnarly.

A friend of mine has one and seriously rates its abilities and reliability. I've only been in it once so can't offer much other comment. Whilst they may not have much street cred, some of those that do seem to spend heck of a lot of time being repaired (either in or just outside of warranty).

Father in law has a Rexton, and I drove one of the original boxy Musso's (SUV) and although neither of them are/were a looker they had Mercedes running gear (engine/box) and weren't half bad. Got to say the warranty is tempting but if its off the road being repaired constantly, then the fact its not costing you is barely consolation.
Not sure who makes the current engine, the auto box is made by a fairly well known independent maker so could be good. From what I've read on t'internet the engine is as smooth as the best 4 cylinder diesels if not better but the ride gets a real panning for being very jittery.....guess the only way to make a decision is to book a test drive.
Regards, Rob.

Before my current L200 I ran an X-Trail (one of the older shape ones, not the new school run one) and I still rate the X-Trail as a better general purpose fishing/stalking/everyday vehicle than the pickup. If you need to carry a big load in the back, and I mean heavy, then the pickup is necessary but if not then I'm forming the opinion that it is just way too compromised to use as a stalking or fishing (I fish in some pretty remote and hard to reach places) vehicle. For example the pickup as a huge turning circle and in much longer so is much harder, or impossible, to turn on a small track especially if it has 4ft ditches on each side, it also turns out that according to the manufacturers spec my X-Trail had only 5mm less ground clearance than the L200. I could go on, there is no question that there are areas where a pickup will defeat a decent X-Trail type vehicle but having now run both I'm finding that in the real world most of those things are less important than the areas where the X-Trail beats the pickup.

In the end the only thing that gives you traction off road is tyres so the key thing is to buy something that you can get AT type tyres to fit, plus they will be more robust and puncture proof.

I know nothing about the Musso specifically but based on my experience I'd say that you shouldn't write off a "softer" option against the pickup because you may find on most ground and for most real world uses it is actually a better solution.

caorach, it has to be a pick up truck for me, it is the only vehicle suitable for my needs, dogs, deer, bags of feed, logs etc.

Today I had 4 gate posts, 2 dogs, a tool kit and 2 Roe Does in the back of my Ranger.

With regard to the Manual/Auto debate, after 40 years of driving manuals I now drive an Auto, I would never, ever, go back to a manual. I actually find a manual gearbox a real pain nowadays, and quite frankly pointless! :)

I've got a 12 plate, bit gutless for towing and seemingly only rated to 2T if that is an issue.
Otherwise its not bad been a few long journeys down south in comfort and goes some quite queer places too usually still in 2wd.
Seems to be plenty of gadgets on it but luckily no seat belt alarm

If its cheap enough and in decent nick they're ok but it would have to be a good bit cheaper than a more normal make.
To be fair can't really fault it.

Must admit i'll be after a newer pick up next year but i just wish they'd make a normal pick up with hardly any elecrics, all this central locking (pick ups locking themselves after 5 mins) everytime u open a doo r lights uplike a christmas tree or starts bloody bleeping at u. esp boody seat belt warnings. Grrr!
The 2nd hand market of these fancy elecrtonic things is just a nightmare as so much to go wrong and normal garages can't get into the computers etc, just making engines cars (and tractors, quads even bloody chainsaws) complicated for the sake of it

Now run a VW Amarok, looked at Ranger and Nissan before bying.
Thought Ranger had a load area higher than others when comparing to the Navara and the Nav bonnet seemed a little high which made vision of track edges hard to see when going up hill.
