I'm sorry to disagree once again, but a 100% success rate at killing deer shot at 50yds can mean only one thing. And that thing is not something I would ever dare be certain of. The number of things that can go wrong is large, and the effect of all of those things increases disproportionately with increasing range.

That was the inference I drew from your quoting my post and then asking what would make me 100% sure of a kill:

The point I keep trying to make is that anyone who takes a shot with 100% certainty of a killing hit is deluding himself. With this risk of missing/wounding in mind, one has to consider how likely a second shot is to be successful: range is an important factor in this.So what would make you 100% sure of a kill @ 50yds?.............. Is every shot a "shot in the dark"?

As an inexperienced stalker with a bit more experience of range work this thread has been an interesting read.

However, I can't escape from the thought that as distance increases, margin for error on a constant target area (say 4 inches) decreases rapidly?

If I fire a 1 MOA rifle at a deer ranged at 100 yards i've got 3 MOA of margin to allow for adrenalin, gust of wind, whatever other variable may come along. At 600 i'd have to shoot perfectly with no margin of error for any variable and hope my rifle performed better than usual?

You might V bull 5 shots out of 6 at 600 on a range but I wouldn't want to hit a deer with the stray one.

Of course I may have overlooked something in this topic, i've had a few beers

Have you never misplaced a bullet? If (like most of us, I'm sure) you have, what does that tell you about your feeeling of 'sureness'?

What I'm suggesting is that you always have to be a bit unsure, because the activity of shooting rifles at wild animals out of doors comprises many potentially adverse variables not all of which can always be dealt with. One takes the shot and automatically reloads 'just in case' - what is the chance of that 'just in case'? It is always there, so the one can never be 100% sure of a satisfactorily-placed shot.

I have no idea what my exact percentage chance of hitting satisfactorily is with any particular shot, but I'm certain it's never 100%. I am, however, confident that for the shots I've taken up about 250yds it is in the high 90s.

If the word 'competance' were substituted for 'confidence', I would  agree entirely.
As it stands, though, it strikes me as a dangerous fallacy.
Just because someone is 'confident' of something doesn't mean that they  are competant to do it or indeed that it is the right thing to do

It certainly can be: unfortunately it is not uncommon for people to be confident to an extent not justified by their abilities or experience.

why am i giving you a bad name bud as posted on hear by another member have a good look at some of the long rainge forums see what others better than me can shoot or get some good dvds beyond belefe is a good one and what maikes you think my shots dont kill what im pointing at i did not say every shot i taike is 600yards i told you my longest shot was 600yards and the deer droped like a sack of **** you may not understand that in most cases a round at distane can and will do more meat damage to the beast responcable stalking hmmm i kill every one and still to date have not had a runner ie got the beast within 20yards dead of the shot never had a licence revoked no where on my tikket is there the wording shoot deer at 100yards and being a stalker / no im a hunter i eat every thing i shoot dont sell it feed my family as for being a idiot have a closer look to home bud if you think every one shoots 200yards then your living in a box get out more with your gun put more rounds down rainge and when you can get all your rounds in a 5in disk at 500yards try doing the same at 600 with a 4in target you are using a stalking rifle which is not the best for long rainge shots most of them are good to go at 2in or more from the box i use hevey barreled guns from a by pod i rainge find the target dial in and send the round down rainge oooo and idiots dont become shooting instructors that honest enughf for you

arrhh, haven't read the whole post, but now it rings a bell. You are the chap who shoots 400 deer a year and has never had a runner... now you say you are are eating everything you shoot. It gets better and better
