When Will We Be Hunting Abroad

Good luck with it, I think you have more chance of getting to any of the Scandinavian countries to hunt than a number of us trying to get out to Africa. What are you hunting in Sweden out of interest
We're going after boar. Unfortunately the last trip wasnt successful so looking to try again later this year.

Just to further tease myself I have been looking at flights and options to Namibia from Heathrow for October this year, no harm in hoping, however if I were a betting man!!!

Not as depressed as me ive fully paid up to go last year and was hoping for a rescheduled August this year
Ohhh mate I feel your pain, I only paid half of my trip to Namibia plus 2 return tickets with SAA splashed out business class (paid by debit card, schoolboy error so only offered vouchers) . I would love to use them this year but looks unlikely

Luckily I've not booked any flights amd tbhbtbe holiday can be carried over ill wait and see closer to the time and possibly get a refund if its canned again

I had my trip to South Africa cancelled last June. I was concerned that SAA were going down as well, but they have given credits for the flights. Hunters Hill also gave credits for the deposits we paid, and I have rebooked with them for JUne 2022. I would hope we are back to something like normal by then. Can't book flights of course until at least July this year, but here's hoping.

Our little group is in the same position with Mozambique. Carried over from October last year to (hopefully) October (ish) in 2022.

One our our group (on SD) did sterling work and clawed back our international and internal flight money - monies I was fairly sure we had all lost.

The deposits for the Safari are "rolled over" towards whatever the 2022 costs will be.

Lots of variables in the mix.

The "you know what pandemic", the world restating, group members getting their long awaited new hip - all staying alive long enough. :-| 🤞

I managed to get our internal flights refunded, but with SAA's precarious position it was just credit notes with them. Been in touch a couple of time though and they seem to be good for it so far.

Hi Lochens, like you we went through the cancellation of flights to Namibia last year we have SAA Heathrow Johannesburg Windhoek and splashed out for business class for my partner and I. SAA nearly went in to bankruptcy and were only bailed out by the SA Government who now effectively ”own them” we only got a “ voucher” to rebook right through to 2022 for the value of the tickets which we bought on debit not credit cards. The upside is SAA have done some restructuring but with Government involvement now should stay in business till we are able to go. Not given up on Oct/Nov this year but lots would have to go well for that to happen, most of Africa including SA and Namibia are still on the U.K. Red listed countries. However I am an optimist so let’s see how the rest of the year plays out

If you paid by credit card claim the refund from them

when you do get abroad to hunt, has anyone transported the meat back? Curious on the process for that although don't think ill get the chance to do that anytime in the not to distant future, thinking if I do manage to get out on moose or caribou at some point id like to bring that back with me!

For me there is enough hassle with taking a firearm and rounds plus licenses without trying to bring back any meat, as per bfitd0 point just eat as much of it while you are there

Have never done so, and not heard of others doing so. However I am sure some will have.

In my (limited) experience, the meat goes to feed the camp and the locals.

You will get to eat plenty of what you shoot back at camp and rather special that food is.

It is hard enough to get you and your kit there and back - especially South Africa and by which I mean Johannesburg - perhaps my least favourite place in the world.

Whilst on the subject of what else not to bring back...trophies are expensive and can take over two years to catch you back up in the UK. They are the gift that keeps on giving and can almost double the cost of your trip.

So yeah, save a few quid and all the associated hassle -take a good camera for the "Trophies", stick to a MacDonald's at the airport and as much in-flight booze as you can throw down your neck, to numb the memories of another horrendous trip through Jo'burgh.

I have to say that my trophies have taken from as little as 6 months up to a year, but the quality of them has been excellent. Although SAA are ok now, the biggest issue was that they have dumped their own internal services. This means changing operator's at either Capetown or Jo'Burg. This limits the carriers of firearms and the airports you can get to. Collecting and rebooking in firearms adds more time and fees as well. If you can, go vi Capetown rather than Joburg though. Much better set up there.

On your next stalk in the UK, make sure you take/buy the carcass, butcher it and stick it in the freezer. Job done and a lot cheaper than an overseas exped!
Yeah that's the aim, only done the one stalk so far which I did keep so I could use the meat over Christmas which went down a treat!
