Both are supersonic , hence equal when each has tge correct moderator on it ! The hornet will have a greater amount of gas to cool so for safety and efficiency it will carry a larger cf moderator
To put it into real terms at 8ft into a bale both are silent when moderated , it takes more than 8 yards for tge sonic boom to build .
I have a rangevfiring point about 30 yards from the kitchen external door . Shooting 22 hornet moderated with its cf spec moderator my Mr says she can't hear it in the house , tge hmr could be previously.
If you are thinking of either hornet I cf over a rimfire I should 100% recommend you go for it . Personally I much prefer tge 22 version and with the inevitable changes to ammo I think its tge wise man's choice . Reason being 17 is going to be an extremely light bullet in copper etc . Also the 22 version is very compatible with home cast lead to 1700 fps 2800 is the top end with jacked lead , when copper comes I suspect we will be looking at 25 grain copper? That's going to be moving at a very similar speed to the 17 hornet with lead but better terminals.
My 22 hornet zero at 140 yards is point and shoot to 160 yards and 2 moa low at 200 yards 5.6 moa fv 10 mph windage its good for 0.25 - 0,5 moa at 200 yards
