Which 22?

I’m potentially looking for a custom build. Probably an impact 737 action with a carbon proof barrel. I want something “future proof” with the constant pressure of the ban and potential copper bullets it’s making me think of different kinds of stuff. I already have a .223 so would like something different. I’m thinking of a .22 creedmoor or 22-250. I have also thought of the .204. I want something flat shooting, distance is only really within 300 yards. In terms of barrel life, I’m not too concerned. What would you recommend and why?

204 Ruger would be the ticket in my view, nice round to shoot drops foxes no probs,

lovely rifle cartridge to use day or night perfect for its intended use on fox and vermin,

much lower noise report compared with 22-250 and using a 20 cal specific mod eg wildcat evo/dpt/dm80

a 204 rifle custom or say stock howa 1500/tikka t3x/sako 85 with a dpt magnum mod in 20 cal format would be quite the effective tool to use on farms 👌

22 creedmoor. Go fast or go home. As in future proof you do mean keeping your rifle builder in a job making barrels don’t you?

At £1400-£1600 fitted or probably more now for a carbon barrel I would consider the need and use of the rifle. Will carbon actually be beneficial. Most often a light weight profile steel barrel will weigh less than a carbon wrapped barrel. Especially evident in short barrels around 20”.

The most important factor is the carbon barrel looks a lot better.

If you have a .223 then a 22 creedmoor would work well. I went with a 6mm creedmoor so I am deer legal for all species.

At least with the 22 creedmoor it will feed reliably in a 5 round AICS magazine. No need for the dedicated MDT 10 round 22-250 magazine. There was an awesome Tikka T3 in 22-250 recently. That would have been a great rifle to have had to see what works before jumping into a £5k custom.

Myself and a shooting pal both have had many customs but over the years the simplest tool for the job has often come out of the safe and both of us like a Tikka. Me a T3 and because he is a dinosaur the 590/595. More money for other toys. Unless that’s not an issue. Then one of everything 😁

If you are not worried about barrel life, then 204 sounds the best choice.
22BR might be another candidate!

Dave Wylde built me a 22.243 middlestead a few years ago, it’s amazing. Shoots 75gr Amax bullets at 3700fps and turns foxes inside out. Zeroed at 100m it’s 7.5” low at 300m. But, the 22 creedmoor is now a factory loaded version and would be a far easier option for home loading.
