Which moderator?

I too shoot a Tikka T3 in 270 and have had no problems or issues with the Wildcat I had fitted, I use T8s on my other rifles but chose the Wildcat for the 270 for it's ease of cleaning, they all do the job though.

I saw and handled a "Third-eye" mod recently (someone gave the link in an earlier post). A cracking piece of kit. Light, nice finish, very well engineered and about £200. If I was in the market again it would be what I'd get.

Not as good as your quality pics above pigglet but here's a few quick snaps of the Evo / Third Eye Engineering Spartan Moderator on a Tikka T3 .243 to give you guys another idea of size etc

Very impressed with the build quality of the Mod and received outstanding service from Craig at Evo too.

I've not had the chance to put any rounds through it yet, was supposed to be doing that tomorrow but I got a fortunate invite for a day at the hinds which has obviously taken priority :-D

I've had a good look at loads of alternative moderators but glad i chose this. Price wasn't my main governing factor but they really are excellent value at £210

Looking forward to trying it out and see how it performs in the field.

i use a Jet Z CQB on my .223, i much prefer it to the ugly over barrel designs that ruin your barrels. 500g in weight and pretty small considering, like a tank though made from carbon steel

Bought my new Sako in 30-06 two days ago, gorgeous bit of kit. Sadly though I thought it had the same thread as my T3 to use the same Mod, it doesn't !!! So in the market for a new Moddy myself now, going for a Roedale with the first two baffles in stainless. It weighs half / third of what others do and realistically a couple of Db makes absolutely no difference in the field should it be noisier than one or two percieved quieter ones.
A mate has one on his .243 and it handles like a dream, my .243 has a stainless Northstar and is like a pig compared to his. My .243 is now going to be more or less exclusively for charlie, so it won't matter out of a vehicle on most outings. It is a good Mod though, just heavy compared to the Roedale, but then again, all others are !

Ade,
if you are stuck for a second rear threaded end for a Roedale delta mod, I mostly have
a few spares.

I believe Sako are M15x1 Tikka are M14x1 unless it's a heavy barrell and then it's M18x1

Not that that helps you any shape form or manner....

Ive got the Pez large(stainless) muzzel can, cant be stripped but its stainless so a squirt of WD40 after each use seems to do the job. It really does take the sound right down.

I was present at the moderator test that Bruce Potts published in Shooting Times last year which covered all the main makes available at that time. The Pes came out either on top or very near on all the calibres tested. The downside is that to get the quietest you also have to have the largest baffle stack/expansion chamber such as Pes/Reflex.Having said that every mod seems to have a distinct report and the quietest on a counter doesn't always sound the same to our mark 1 ears
I'm struggling to think of a bad centrefire mod on the market at the moment and its up to the individual what they want be it strippable/light/muzzle mounted/reflex type

For the record I'm using the Third Eye Spartan which seem to tame large capacity cases well and the Atec CMM

Northstar

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your suggestions, in the end I went with.................................. Ase Utra Northstar. Paid £240 for it.

It has one hell of a difference, my groups are tighter already, sub 1" at 100 yards, so very happy.

First outing since I fitted the mod stalked a young fallow doe, this years offspring, spotted her from about 150 yards over the crest of a hill, all I could see was the tops of her ears at that point.

Left my sticks there as I know a shot of the bipod was highly likely, i then walked crouched down for about 80 yards, the crest of the hill kept me completely hidden, the wind was good. As I approached the crest of the hill I dropped and crawled the final 30 yards, the doe was feeding there completely unaware that I was poised. She was no more than 40 yards away, the hill was keeping her body hidden only her neck and head were visable. At such close range I decided that the neck was the best option, so I squezzed off a .270 federal 130 grain, it hit home and the doe dropped on the spot. Lovely eating animal, as I type this I have got a beautiful stew going for the family.

The best part about the whole experience was, my ears were not ringing after the report. At the age of 28, don't really want to be going deaf anytime soon, fair play to the mod. The Ase Utra Northstar, worth every penny. As it is stainless it should last me a good few years if taken care of well.

When I get my .243 in the very near future, I will definitely be fitting the Northstar to that!

All have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I've just got a northstar myself, not had a chance to check the zero yet. Did you find the zero had moved much on yours?

Cheers John

On Friday I zero'd my new Blaser .243 which had also come with a Northstar. As well as the excellent noise reduction I was also very pleased with the fact that it didn't unduly affect the balance of the rifle. I have a tin of stove paint and am going to blacken mine to make it less obvious ;) Hopefully between now and the New Year I'll get the chance to take it out for real.

Hi John,

It did shift the vertical zero by 4". As you would imagine the horizontal did not change.

I have been told the extra weight on the barrel will naturally move the zero down.

Let me know how you get on and if it had a similar effect on your zero?

Cheers

Ross
