Which one? 6.5 PRC or 270 WIN

I am getting a new rifle, make/spec TBC but a very important part of the purchase is the calibre.

My areas of comparison would be ammo availability, cost, barrel life and lethality/energy retention.

If barrel life is critical, then forget 6.5PRC and 284-6.5. You will get about twice the barrel life from a 284W, but you will have to reload. Good for 1000 yards and plenty of bullets to choose from.

something that i can take into the hills and hunt at distance (500-600m)
That's a long way for a single shot clean kill.

I would argue that the difference in those calibres is less important than the shooters ability to accurately estimate wind speed and distance.

I enjoy hitting plates at 400 with my 270, but my 1st couple of sighters would have scared off any deer.

No reason why if you do your bit
behind the butt …& if you put the correct data into you ballistic app…
AND that data is reading wind correct you can be hitting 4ā€ targets / gongs first shot

Heights easy bit …. Wind horizontal stuff more difficult

Apps …. Put sh1t n get sh1t out

Then some folks do actually go out and physically shoot the ranges see what drops are …. Once done it shouldn’t be ā€œ too ā€œ hard to hit 4ā€ at 400 ?

I’ve been shooting a .270 since 1973, a Remington 700 ADL. It’s the first rifle I purchased, I was 14. Even though I bought a 30-06 a few years later I still used the .270 almost exclusively for all big game until about 10 years ago when I purchased a 6.5x55. I now use the 6.5x55 on big game though if I ever go for another elk I’d probably use my 30-06.

I’m not young, 62, and doubt I’ll be purchasing many firearms before I kick the bucket. That being said if I purchase another rifle it will be a 6.5 PRC. It will be strictly from want, not need. Since I will not take a shot on any animal past 350 yards, I don’t believe a 6.5 PRC has any advantage over a .270 for my use, I just want a 6.5 PRC. If I were shooting out to 600 yards I could easily justify buying a 6.5 PRC.
