My Sako 75 synthetic stock is looking rather worn (12 years old ) .I am asking myself do I buy a custom stock ?
Would it improve my accuracy ? Or would it just be an expensive waste of my cash ? Can I have your opinions and reasons for fitting a custom
to an old rifle or not ?

WILL cost you lots of money.
MIGHT improve your groups
DOUBTFUL if you'll shoot more deer
These are my feelings, and yet I hanker for that perfect fitting stock....

I have come to the conclusion that the fit of your stock to yourself has a massive impact on accuracy. So yes, if the custom stock is made to your exact requirements it will help, a lot.
However, it will be expensive. You can achieve the same effect by taping wads of pipe lagging to the stock in appropriate places.

It's in the eye of the beholder!
I don't go over board for custom stocks but being lefthanded when I was wanting a proper leftie for my HW80 then I did go not to the very top but part way there.
I got a GinB stock that I feel is sublime and not too garish.
I now have a practical stock that I'm not afraid to use in anger but at the same time pay a bit more attention than normal.IMG_0015.webp

If it twer me with a nasty synth i would have a go at tidying it up first ,simply because i,m a skinflint and will only pay/buy something as a last resort, and it wont cost bugger all. spare money yes go and buy another stock. the rifle will still go bang.

if its shooting ok why bother, mine as had the **** knocked out of it, but shoots brilliant, its a tool use it. bs.

Ceracote it??

It's down to you. Do you want to spend them money? From my point of view, I'm left handed with long arms so after I figured out my measurements I had a stock made to suit so I didn't need bits of rubber or tape or risers. Standard stocks just don't fit me. I will spend the money on another one for my 243 unless I decide I want a different rifle. But as I'm a tightwad I thinking I may keep the rifle and just change the stock.
My rifles are tools, therefore if it fits, I'm keeping it for ever and ever and ever..... :)

You could get yourself some plasticote paint and spray it. A kydex cheek riser is easy enough to make. You can alter the shape prior to painting with filler as long as you make a decent key for it to stick to.
You can always look for a secondhand wood stock if you would prefer. There’s probably some kicking about taken off donor actions.

Don't waste your money ! Been there with a SSS stock and won't do it again , it was just heavy and cumbersome for me , sold it with a big hit and back to original wood stock and it shoots absolutely crack on

Oh bum! Now having seen that I’m going to have to find one for mine!!! Been pondering it for over 20 years...your ‘80 looks great mate

Get a new one made by Alan Hadjio of schafteweke.de will cost about 500 euros but worth every penny.
Here's a picture of one he made for me for my Blaser R8My R8 Stock.webp

The sako 75 synthetic is quite a good stock. I had one for years and it was very accurate. I don't think any custom stock would of made it any more accurate.
It's really up to you if you want to spend your money but if the rifle is shooting well and the stock fits you I wouldn't bother changing it.
