Has anyone owned / trained both breeds who could enlighten me on pros and cons, will be used for stalking only
Any advice appreciated

I own both and personally would go Hwv, just that bit easier to train and live with , they want to please and be with you . Nothing at all wrong with the Gwp especially when they calm down and get over the teenage period but at times they can be challenging and you feel the train is moving backwards whereas with the viz it’s the opposite.

I own two.
One is mainly for stalking but will pick up birds etc. Not great with other dogs, nor stock. Likes to kill things.

The other is absolutely obsessed with pheasants. He’s good as gold with other dogs and stock and very soft mouthed.

Both are very exciting to see work. Not always in a good way. 🙈

I’ve only seen a few HWV work. They be best described as steady. Tbh probably ideal for stalking.

thanks for replies so far,
another question I need answers too is I know a couple off GWP that suffer from fits , is this common in this breed and is it down to genetics or as a friend has suggested that it might be down to the certain inoculations they get when pups ???

love my whv ,great to take out stalking ,and will pick up and flush all day ,lovely nature and very intelligent .nothing she wont do .would defiantly have another

Hi mate

Could speak to the keeper I got my dog from just up the road in Abington.

My dogs mum is a GWP and honestly she amazed me on how abiding she was.

She is the keepers personal dog and I'm sure he would have a good chin wag with you.

Make sure what ever breed you get. It is from health tested parents. Been there with a HWV with huu. Arron on SD had a bitch that was the same ****ing in the bed struggling to pee. Just like my dog .
Good luck which ever breed you go for

I have a Viz x Lab and a pure Viz - Mongrel all the way, use him for deer, birds, rabbits, fox, etc friendliest dog would trust him with anything bar a roast chicken. Pure Viz is a rehome and whilst he does work, he's more of a pet. My best mate has a GWP, it's the softest thing going at home, but crunches birds, has caught and killed Roe and I wouldn't trust it anywhere near livestock
