Zeiss Repair

Whilst stalking this October my Zeiss 7x42 binoculars fogged up on one side. Macleods in Tain were kind enough to send them back for repair.
Got a mail today.......£920 to repair the water damage, who's kidding who, I can buy a new pair at that price.
Should say they are 10 years old and Zeiss serviced them 2 years ago for no small sum.

I got a 22 year old scope repaired under warranty by Zeiss for a similar problem at their premises at Three Rivers juts off the M25 near Gerrards Cross. I don't see why they won't do the bins under warranty?
The guy I dealt with was Mark Kahn, but that was quite a while ago.
It could be worth a phone call.

Thanks dodgyrog, I'll await the reply from Zeiss from my reply to them but will keep this in mind.

A few years ago I had a pair of 7x42 bgats that had been dropped and misted up one side, they new they had been damaged and still repaired them foc, seems strange maybe a change of policy or staff???

sort them out good as new for a fraction of the cost. Should be under the zeiss 30 year guarantee though

Never knew there was a 30 year warranty, I'll get back to Macleods Tain where I bought them.

Hi I've just sent you a pm but in rellation to a 30 year warranty there used to be some time ago.The current warranty is 10 years parts and labour. This is on all scopes and binos apart from the RF versions which the electrics are supported for the same period.

Regards Jon

Just a thought, if they were 'damaged' and not just faulty, if you have home insurance you may be covered- less the excess

this is half the reason why stalkers etc buy the top 3 brands of binos !

ive had my leica's comming up for 3 yrs now and there covered under warranty for 30 yrs anywhere in the world !

I have had mine 8x56 repaired for 1/10 of that price you been quoted. Mine are over 30 years old though and not under warranty any more. Sione then they fogged up, sent them back to Zeiss and they fixed then free of charge. Contact Zeiss directly, not via dealer. They are good people, it might take time as I think they have only one engineer and is ofetn busy with shows etc, but will soft it for you.

Now i know why i bought swarovski ;):stir:

Provided that your glass was not actually submerged in water, as this model is not rated as waterproof, then i would have thought they would have been covered under warranty. However without the warranty to hand i have no idea what the small print says. £920 would suggest that major components have to be replaced. Could the glass have been accidently damaged to have allowed misting to occur in the first place. Glasgow binocular repairs in Hope st, may offer a good 2nd opinion, though they would need the glass itself.

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice, I've been offered a new pair for £800 by Zeiss, should be £1400 but have decided to change to swarovski and not repeat my problem.

I refer the honerable gentleman to my previous answer:tiphat: i can only say that each time i have dealt with swarovski thay have exeeded my expectations and provided service over and above anything else i have experianced elsewhere, you will not regret your decision.

Would it not be a good idea to buy them, and sell on while still sealed in the box ?
With a £600 discount you must be in with chance of making money, to put towards the Swarovski's.

Neil. :)
