7mm options

(the 7mm Rem Mag )... Surely a nice cartridge for a more-or-less dedicated mid to long range rifle. If you are looking for a multi purpose rifle you are also going to use on driven hunts I'm not sure what sort of advantage you would really have over a bit milder 7mm.

That is my thinking, and why I have a .280 Rem with 22-inch barrel, a 7x64 in a 20-inch fullstock Mauser, and two 7x64s in 23.5-inch rifles.
The 7x64 / .280 has 100 yards over the 7x57 in terms of energy. It really can do a lot more with the 160 and 175-gr bullets than a 7x57 or 7mm-08 can. If you are hunting large game at closer ranges, such as boar, bear, and moose, the 7x64 has all the power you need, vs the 7mm RM, and less recoil, faster second shot, etc. With the 140-gr bullets, the 7x64 shoots like a .270 Winchester.... or you can load it mildly like a 7x57R.

A nice little cartridge, but why go to the considerable work and expense involved in acquiring a custom reamer, case-forming etc when the 7mm-08 provides a bit more performance with 140s and equally good precision, all other things being equal? If one had to have a small 7mm with that performance level, the 7mm BR with a suitably throated chamber is of a similar size to the .280/30 British but has dies and chamber reamers available. Obtaining brass is a simple one or two-pass expansion of 6mm BR Norma case-necks and the Lapua 6BR case is a proven high-quality and very strong number.

I have the reamers and dies on the shelf for 280 british and you make the brass from 300 savage , one pass through the fl sizer and trim . .... job done , Yours respectfully Mike Norris Brock and Norris Custom rifles

The only reason the 7x64 is so popular in France is that they could not us a 30-06 ( 7.62x63 ) so necked a 30-06 case down by just .62mm to 7mm to make a legal round the 7x64 was borne. I have a friend who have a 7x64 a great round but cases can be hard to find, I have a 30-06 so I'd go for 30-06 IMO it's all you will need.

7 x 64 a german invention developed from a mauser round. The french had 4/5 of 5/8 of FA to do with it. The 30.06 was a development of a mauser round as well!

Hi,

The 7mm Rem Mag is an excellent choice, However also consider the following:

.284 Winchester. As hard hitting as the 7mm Rem mag.

.280 Remington.

We have built many 7mm Calibre Rifles and are a very popular choice.

Take a look at the ballistics of the 2 and if you want a chat or advice feel free to message us.
