See little point in such things as I have been shooting for many years and the way things have progressed have been easy enough to foretell. Consequently I am perfectly prepared to accept that new restrictions will be placed upon us and that the subjective issue of what is acceptable will be made objective in some way. After all we have managed to come up with differing standards even within the UK. I like you, have other calibres to choose from and therefore it would make no difference too me but do see it as a continuation in the restriction on the ability of the individual to be seen as competent enough to make these decisions. If you do not know what is appropriate in the circumstances there is something to be said for not being allowed to a ticket in the first place.

The main point is I have to do a dissertation so I chose a subject that I`m interested in , stalking and firearms .
I also think its important to question ourselves occasionally as to whether we could be doing things better , if we didn't there would still be clowns legally shooting Reds with a .22LR , looking to improve also shows responsibility to outsiders , as as we all know there are some who would like to see stalking/firearms banned completely.

Indeed so and for me at least the only answer is formal training.

Would that mean training will have to be overseen / audited by a government body / recognized colleges / Universities ? :shock: , instructors my have to qualify as teachers and examiners may have to be external....price rises.

Is it not likely that the majority of those that reply to your survey will be .243 users desperate to defend their chosen choice of calibre? Most users of other larger calibres will most likely be indifferent and not participate in the survey. I notice you asked about calibres used, but can you clearly identify how many actually use a .243? I would think you might need this information to ensure statistics collected have validity?

Plus no confusion on the rules on all species large or small and calibres all across the uk and ireland uncluded,ie the same for everyone ,

It already is. Numerous training organisations already exist all working under the umbrella of DMQ.

Instruction, assessment, internal and external verification all carried out under NVQ guidelines and the DSC system is an industry recognised standard. The only thing that is missing is the mandatory requirement. That will undoubtedly follow soon......................

The survey is not specifically about the .243 , its about the legal minimum , it just happens that this is usually a .243 as its the closest commercially available calibre that meets those requirements.

After many years of thinking about it, I finally got around to taking my DSC1 recently. In my view, it is not rigorous enough to prove a great deal. Its better than nothing, but not much.

I certainly hope this day doesn't come. The lead ammo research group, or whatever it was called, was a complete shambles, and thankfully seems to have died away. I believe that in some places on the continent they have actually banned non-lead ammunition due to high incidence of ricochet.


To the OP... Have you found any academic sources that you will be able to reference for this dissertation? (Edit: Any sources that you'll be able to reference at all? Academic sources will be a stretch I'd imagine)
 
Done. But I must add that its not about calibre it should be about bullet placement. As long as it is deer legal calibre and you know the limits of the calibre and yourself, any calibre will do the job, as long as the bullet is in the right place.
