Best 4 x 4 SUV for stalking and road.

for my 10 penith ive had several SUV vehicles over the years from a volvo xc 70, nissan xtrail, Rav 4 and a sante fe. all had a 4wheel option all did well on both road and field, some had better mpg than others. but all were in the mid to high 40's. off road the xtrail was best but none ever got stuck in in some testing condition. its all about tyres and common sense your not driving an all track landrover defender with snorkel. i currently have an new xc60 awd and its great, huge boot (you'd get a moose in it Tarponhead lol), great grip and lush to drive 50plus mpg, was in kielder with it yesterday effortless.

And I still think the Renault Kangoo and in particular the 4x4 is superb. I have a set of winter tyres on 2wd automatic petrol and it will perfectly happily potter around fields. I have driven like my distances in it. Just sit back and bimble along in a slightly hippyish fashion. and it's rubber mats throughout so easy to clean.

We also have an A4 allroad. Great car, fantastic on long drives and superb in mud snow and on tracks, but still a bit too nice to really use as a 4x4. A bit difficult to drive with big walking boots on.

What about a vW synchro van - t5 based.

I have a VW Taoureg R line thats capable of being chipped so pushes out close to 300bhp. It's a perfect mix of refinement and then rugged for the off road part.

I have driven 2000 miles in the past 2 weeks to shoot. Not a regular experience for me, just a busy fortnight. I have a RR Sport (8 years old) with Cooper Zeon tyres on it. To be able to drive 300 miles in comfort, hit a button and have real off road ability, then hit the button and drive home again in great comfort makes it all very realistic and enjoyable.

No big bills yet either...touch wood.

+1 had most pickups but now i have got a Freelander 2 , I had mine remapped to give me Town 40 and 45 on the motorways , its got all the bells and buttons inc heated everything so ice on the screen nah probs lol,one of the best for seat comfort i'v owned , even with 70/30 off road rubber on its still holds like a sticky thing on tarmac

.
I commute an hour each way everyday in my Freelander 2 and keep up with the Defenders in the deep mud and ruts on our stalking and pheasant syndicate on the weekend. I get 38mpg with town and country road driving using AT tyres.

yes cracking drive never wory about the mpg as I have to do the journey and probably do it too quickly my choice. the other questions have a look on the Amarok Forum.

I payed £250 mine Also is the HSE SD4
PS forgot to add this guy races and builds for off road so he's no mug on landy's

Wish I knew how to get 38mpg from a Freelander 2. I've run a 12plate SD4 HSE for 3 years now. I do not exceed the speed limits any more (!!). I get about 31-32mpg driving from Leicester to Scotland and 23-28 running about. I've had it 'chipped' for economy - FA difference.
I'm looking to replace it - but 40k+ for a Disco Sport hurts. The Yeti is No1 in the running to date. Very few give ground clearance details.
Disco and RR Sport are too big for me (and the dog).
Watching the thread with interest.

Anyone use a Amarok 180bhp auto, if so what's the average MPG. Also, anyone chipped a Amarok 180bhp auto and what's the increase in MPG?

Thanks

DS

Genuine 31.0mpg (forget what the dash says) when driving normally (Rear canopy fitted).
When towing a trailer about 23-25mpg.

Mine is chipped to 215bhp. Noticed no difference in mpg. But, it stops it changing down from 8th to 7th, if running at 60mph and you go to speed upto say 70mph.
The extra torque stops this happening.

Not an auto, I have the manual, but love it. Drives like a car, almost, and good, on/off road, subject to tires.

There are owners claiming an average of circa 38-40mpg, but I can't get anywhere near it, on my best day, regardless of how I drive. I'm pleased if I see circa 30mpg on the motorway.

As for "tuning", well, done properly, you'll certainly see an increase in power, and torque, and I would recommend having it "remapped" by an experienced tuner, over ANY of the "tuning box" options out there. I have "back to back" tested several, on a rolling road, and the claimed power figures are at best grossly over stated, as are the improved fuel economy figures. Part of the issue, is REGARDLESS of what some companies claim, they have no RPM input, and fuel is thrown in, even when you don't need it.

Unlike petrol engines, the power of diesel engines is increased by adding fuel. Tuning boxes do this by off-setting the fuel pressure sensor signal, so the ECU thinks it's running less fuel than it actually is. The ECU adds fuel to compensate, and more power is achieved.

However, the ECU thinks it's running less fuel, and the on-board computer will show a significant increase in fuel economy. It is false. The only way to get a more accurate idea is to to top the tank up, do XXX miles, top the tank, and work out fuel v miles. Even this will be +/- a few %.

A good remap, where the actual parameters, and values are adjusted, should improve both power, and economy by a small %.

Bottom line, either will give more power, but just drive, and enjoy !

A Subaru Forester is a great hunting rig, can haul a moose in quarters, mount a rocket box on the top rack, even pull a small trailer. New ones have 17' tires and really comfortable. I'm sure at least one or two red deer would fit when skinned and quartered. Favorite SUV in Alaska.

Thanks Coddy and Lateral for the input. I almost bought an Hilux but swayed to the VW due to many people stating that they drive more sporty with a better car like feel. I use a A6 C7 Allroad at the moment and while its amazing to drive and averages 45 mpg on my Scotland trips, its getting ruined inside and smells like a cross between a dog pen and gralloch.

I'm picking up a Amarok Ultimate auto very soon so will let you know what I think. If I go down the diesel-chip route it sounds like a remap is the way to go.

Thanks

Nissan Navara D40 i get 42 mpg and does about 300 miles each week. the engine has now done 236000 miles with no hassle (apart from clutches)
And its very smooth and when needed rips the arse off most motors.
lots to choose from. Good luck
I take it all back.... Dont buy a D40 my chassis snapped. But Nissan did buy it back at a good rate.
All the best Tommy

crikey ! was nothing spotted during MOT's ?
HI tackb. no nothing was spotted. it seem to be a fault in the D40 Chassis. there are hundreds of them just snapping for no reason. The chassis were made in Spain and only protected on the out side. So they are rusting from the inside out. IF ANY ONE ON HERE RUNS A NAV THEN GET IT INSPECTED. CONTACT NISSAN UK AND THEY WILL SEND OUT RAC INSPECTORS. AND IF GOOSED THEN THEY WILL BUY BACK AT THE GOING RATE. BUT PLEASE DO GET IT CHECKED OVER I WOULD HATE FOR THERE TO BE A FATALITY OVER A DESIGN FLAW. Sorry for the bold letters but drivers be ware.
