The land rover defender probably the best 4x4 ever built

I suppose i have been very lucky because growing up in the sixties when our old vehicles broke down we did not have the funds for a garage to repair them so we had to learn or walk everywhere, I for one love the simplicity of the defender and enjoy maintaining and driving it,
But what i like most about the vehicle is that even if it is parked on my drive in pieces whilst awaiting spares from Paddocks to arrive, it is actually going up in value
show me another 4x4 that can do that,

Which is just as well as it helps recuperate some of the money you need to spend to keep them on the road...!

Appreciate that. I was just pointing out that cars I used to own are now fetching silly money. As for 4x4 I will stick to my Isuzu.

i know where your coming from Malc,

my old renault 5 alpine turbo 2 was for sale a few months back for £36,000 i sold it in 1988 to a london showroom for just £11,000, not a 4x4 but a collectible car none the less,

bob.

Have a Defender 90 300 tdi, had it for eleven years, spent f all on it bar consumables and it's my day to day transport, only vehicle that still puts a smile on my face.

I think the quote above sums it up (it puts a smile on my face) and that is exactly how i feel, if was doing the same job as you Malc travelling long distances i would use my x-trail, but for driving around the Sussex countryside towing the trailer and quad its ideal. So if you see a light green defender driven by an old boy with a big grin on his face there is a good chance it could be me.

hardly run of the mill daily drivers now are they ,any land rover these days has shot up in value even a god awful 109 series 3 diesel is a sought after vehicle and for years you couldn't even give them away

And nor is the hatefully uncomfortable, leaky, poorly braked , noisy land rovers !

looking at the How many left website, there are zero 1970's Hi luxes left on road but still 1537 109's taxed and mot'd.

You may not like it but the defender is here to stay and in another twenty years or so when all your modern stalking vehicles are crushed at the breakers, my old defender will still be driving around the countryside towing a heavy trailer rattling leaking being driven by its proud new owner with a big smile on his or her face, doing the job that it was designed for.

I bought a new grey Defender County short wheel base in 2006
My discerning Wife said it was a white elephant and it was
The first attempt to extract a deer was defeated by a moderate slope of wet grass
The dealer said I had the wrong tyres and sold me some cross country ones
What were the first tyres for then she asked
The heating system didn't. The windscreen was designed to splat every bug in England.
It was noisy, thirsty, uncomfortable and these things called UJ joints kept on breaking
I was delighted when she sold it for £16,000 in 2014 to an Army fella who was delighted with the Wolf engine

I got more fun out of using a Citroen C1 for stalking
I've some respect for the fellas that persevere with them

landrover the best 4x4 ever built and built and built and built and built and built and built and built, scrapped then rebuilt had an hooky mot! then rebuilt again, the parts have done more miles than the whole vehicle!!:cuckoo:

:tiphat: Here Here !!!

yes that being,

1, breaking down for the umpteenth time,
2, creating yet another hole in you savings,
3, more new parts replacing almost new parts that broke,
4, making you feel great as it's back on the road but for how long,
5, and if you don't fix it yourself, then it's going to make a mechanic somewhere very happy,
6, then you drive it down the road smiling back at everyone smiling at you and that's only because you purchased it instead of them.
7, and finally the horseless CART is back on the road for how much longer, we just don't know ?

just man up and be brave and admit it, they are a pile of cr@p that only ever belongs next to the best thing on a defender owners driveway..........a SKIP!

Ha! Man up? Wots that all about, his he not entitled to an opinion? Why so bitter and personal bob with Geoff? Couldn't help but notice in your gallery the shot of what looks suspiciously like the front end of a Discovery. Spot of bother with the Disco had we? Its akin to having a poor Curry and then berating every other Indian restaurant !

Geoff knows it's a bit of fun, no way am i ever going to persuade him to part with his cart,

see what i done there.... another joke,

joking aside i hate defenders with as much passion as i love my 20 tac's and as for my land rover in the pictures it's my works vehicle i have 3 and a toyota that i use daily if the land rovers are working, but as the toyota is a single cab and is used by the head groundsman i leave it alone,

i have a budget for my work/ Estate vehicles and as i look after all 15, i bet you could tell me what ones i spend most money on....

so in my defence, why buy a 4x4 when your boss gives you free range to use any of them that i choose, i can't use his Aston Martin for stalking or foxing he would be well miffed, so i use what the staff call Roberts vehicle,

a blue landrover called BLUE,

but if i needed a 4x4 and had to buy one it would not be a defender in any format they come in, that being,

on the road
broken down
in the garage
or just fixed,

respect to Geoff re all the *iss taking but if you own a defender you should be used to it,

bob.

I understand , if it was one vehicle I'd have took it on the chin but every single LR product I've owned has been shockingly unreliable, that with the shockingly poor I hesitate to call it service from the dealers , well it's just too much especially when the jap stuff I've owned and used just the same has been utterly reliable , so much so I can't really comment about the dealers !
