Driven boar rifles ......

JB,

I'd expect your lead to change a little, assuming the 9.3x62 is going to be somewhat slower than the 30-06, plus a different mag scope (1.7-10x42 ?)

It will be interesting to hear how you get on, but even a 1.7x is a compromise. Although I'm sure you'll have no trouble.

For ref: FOV at lowest mag, rounded down.

3-12x50 11m

1.7-10x42 25m

1-6x24 42m

I wish I could take both, and I'm tempted to go back to basics and use the 30.06, why do we have so many choices lol

I'll be checking zero tomorrow and see what I think. But you know if you hit anything with the 9.3 and a 286grain dollop it's gonna hurt.
It's about 600fps difference so at 50yds it's not that much difference in lead. My 30.06 chuck 150s at just under 3900fps and the 9.3 chucking 286 about 2300fps

For close use what about adding a small rail on top of your scope and putting a small red dot on that. You see a lot of military set ups like that?

I have claw mounts so I have a 6x42 for longer range or highseat use, a 1.25-4x20 for driven use and open sights if in a really tight spot. Last year I was on a stand on a driven hunt and everything came past at 80 plus yards. Indeed a couple stop at 130 yds away and I wished for a 6x scope. I was borrowing a rifle with a red dot and it was too far to take the shot.

You need flexibility. Most of my german hunting friends have a 308, 30-06, 7x64 or 9.3x62 with a 3-10 x50 and 1-4x20 both on quick detachable mounts and both zeroed at 100, and they take both with them, and use whichever is most appropriate.

If you can, get onto a running boat range and shoot plenty of moving targets. If you have lots of rabbits, a 22 with a driven type scope would also be good practice.

130 yards is well within the capabilities of a red dot with no magnification. I sight mine in at that range. (100m)

Life would be boring !

Do you mean "2900fps" ? 3900fps seems a little fast !

Anybody using a lever action (Marlin) in 45-70 Govt?
Not got it any more but it was fantastic when I had it. Just like using a shotgun. What ever was hit stayed hit. IMHO the ultimate driven boar gun. I used 350 grain bullets.

I used BRNO 9.3 x 62 to great effect , also my 45-70 , good solid lead bullet ,knocked them down , didn't get up.

I’ve had none get up. —. Yet.

You're either an incredibly good shot, incredibly lucky, or you haven't shot many boar. Absolutely no offence suggested, or implied !

I've seen boar appear to be poleaxed, and then get up, and run off. I use a 9.3 with 255gn bullets, same thing. Boar drops like a sack of potato's, couple of death kicks, gets up, and runs off.

That's not to say that these boar don't expire soon after, but it's really not uncommon to see them get up occasionally.

Haven’t grassed many, around 15 odd, but have had no runners - yet

All my boar shooting has been in this country and either stalked into or from a high seat

Driven boar I haven’t undertaken - I keep practising but it’s on my bucket lists to do
