Who uses a fixed scope

S+B 6x42 ret. 7 on my .22wmr for rabbits, excellent glass for what I paid for it (250e).

I have variables on my other 2 rifles: S+B 1.5-6x42 ret. 4 on my .223 (mainly for feral goats) and S+B Zenith FD7 2.5-10x56 on my 6.5x55 for Sika.

Where I live the land is full of hummocks and pockets of rough scrubby woodland, so a longer shot than 125 yds or so would be unlikely (hasn't happened yet, although I'm not nearly as long in the game as many on here). Hence my scopes are all on the lower end of the scale in terms of power.

Thers no faffing about with a variable

Set it for the needs of the day, aim and shoot

Woodland i have it on about 5? Id have it less but you can see the mod and that's off putting

High seat generally about 8 or 10

open hill or big field, max 15

I can count on one hand the amount of times I have altered the mag to take a shot

That is exactly my take on it, in the different topography and different species i shoot, my Z6i is perfect. I fix it before going into dense forest, which i do very rarely, i then fix it for open woodland and open hill. i can then fix it again for zeroing. There is no faffing when shooting, no need to. The one exception is low light, when i can turn it down for more light transfer.
I guess if you shoot one place for one species then one mag setting may work for you. I also understand the cost implications for the variable scopes, and also the minimal weight difference. Different situations and a variable mag will allow us reduce the compromise in all of the situations. For me it is like rifle calibers. For the purposes of discussion and ignoring the law to make the point, a 22rf can shoot a rabbit, fox and a red stag, and in rare situations it is the best for all of these. A .22, 243 and 3006 can also shoot all of them, and as species and distances vary, so does the need for the other rifles (good reason), and so as the species get larger and the distance gets greater the .22 gets less and less ideal and the 3006 becomes more the tool of choice. Mag is the the same, no one mag is perfect in every situation, but i can vary mine to make it as efficient as possible.

These day I have just the one rifle, my much loved (and modified) CZ .22lr
I have just the two scopes I could use, a 3-9x36 Swaro, as new and still boxed, or a well used S&B 4x36 with target turrets and mildot reticle
The fact the Swaro is unused says it all for me.

Zeiss 1.5x12 in QD's on my Tikka 695 Battue 30.06 for European driven days when I don't fancy the irons or the red dot it usually wears.

Docter 6x42 on a Krico stutzen 5.6x57 for Scottish roe and AOLQ.

Everything else sports variables, my favourites being S&B 1.5-6x42 flashdots.

I also have two Edgar Brothers brand 8x56's which over the years have been stop gaps on various rifles for various duties, .22LR, .223, 9.3x62, 7x64 etc etc which have given good service.

For what they cost they deffo punch above their weight.

My normal stalking set up is a old Tikka 695 in 30-06 caliber with a 8 x 56 swaro with an A4i ret.
Out to 300y no messing about with variable mags.
Just point and shoot.

Hi

I still have a 6x42 Habicht Nova, 4a, as a standby in quick release mounts, for my .300WM.
Only took it off as couldnt resist an old Tasco Titan 3-9x42.........

Called two foxes this morning. One was hit square in the bib at 40 yards and the other in the back of head at only 20. The wee 6X40 Habict atop a 222 stutzen was a delight to use.

That's a beautiful, atmospheric picture. Difficult to take your own action shots too!

Back on topic, I have a Nickel 6x43 on top of my drilling with a German number 1 reticle: I'll be honest, I don't like it much. On the other hand, I haven't missed anything with it either. However it is showing its' age and is pretty rubbish at dusk. But the fixed magnification isn't an issue for what I do with it. The only reason I plan on replacing it with a variable scope is that my ultimate intention is still for this gun to be my Everything Gun and at the moment, it's not well set up for driven large game, for those imaginary boar in Brittany that will one day turn up. Especially if I don't have the right gear with me.

More than I care to list , but my favorites are the Leopold M8 4X's . Decent glass , but more importantly , indestructible little things . The older , steel Weaver K series are also good . One old scope that still amazes me is a Hensoldt 6X that's mounted on a pre-war Mauser ( has the banner and everything ) that I gave my brother for his 50th birthday . It's still bright , clear and holds zero perfectly ( the quality of the factory installed claw mounts may have something to do with it ) .
I have a Leopold M8 4X on a 358W that I've recently built . It's a light weight rifle that will see very hard use , the fixed four is just right . It's light , very durable and , to be honest , if a Moose looks to far away at 4X , it probably is .
I have nothing against variables , I own a few . They have their place and advantages . That being said , fixed powers also have their place and , in some situations , are preferable , your mileage may vary .

Leupold FX2 6x42 on a .270Win.
It's for deer stalking, where I think the idea's to get a little closer to the quarry than artillery range.:D

Exactly the way I look at things. Between 100 and 200 yards is what I like to be.
but under 100 I'm over the moon with.
Dont agree with people taking shots longer than 200 to me that's not stalking.
I'll hopefully have a 8x56 on my .243 if I get it.
But just now I've got a 8x42 on my cz452 .22lr.
Wouldnt mind getting another similar for my 17HMR as well.

Have done in the past

Swarovski 8X56 Habicht

I used it for woodland, high seat, walk and stalk fox & deer as it was all I owned on my single 243 rifle

+ Side its cheep and i am told that the 8X56 gave the best low light capability. Variables are not as good due to the lens design necessary to make them variable. Fixed mags are also light weight

- Side. Much too powerful for close woodland stalking, not powerful enough for confident long range shots apart from in the general direction of the front end of the animal type shots. Which lets face, it is all some people want / need especially if using a suitable cannon. I was using a 243 and wanted to be more precise

I am not a bad shot. A few years shooting in competition out to 600yards taught me a thing or two and the simple fact is, at 200m with a 8X56 I am pretty rubbish at 200m with a 2.5/15/56 I can put in a decent group

That said how many shoot deer at 200m? At 100m I can group with an 8X56 but I can group a dammed site better with a 2.5/15/56. Heart shot 8X56? yes all day at 100. Head shot, not so much

I know for a fact I have put deer on the ground with shot i wouldn't have attempted with an 8X56

I am sure there are gurus out there who can shot the eyeball out of a fly at 100m with an 8X56 but that's not the point. At my above average level I know i can shoot better with the more powerful scope.

But theres a limit to the power advantage.

I got a 5X30 and it was so powerful it was off putting seeing the cross hairs jiggle about

I had to have good conditions and my A game on to see any advantage with it, so I sold it.

I also use a Swaro 8x56. Use it for everything although also have a 4-12x50 which Ill be testing shortly. Th 8x56 is great in low light. Allows shots unable to otherwise take in those last couple of minutes of light.

I have shot out to 250 yds with it but most is within 80yds, like most people I suspect. It is also the same as my binos which I was advised to match to scope - decent advice ive found.

Lovely picture, captures the environment very well.

Hows the fixed power luv in going fellas? All feeling nice and warm and cuddly?

Leupold M8 6x42 on my CZ 527 FS in .222 and used for varmint, fox and target work. Like the classic look on this rifle and works well.
