Hello all,

I've just been granted my first FAC-for a 6.5 x 55. Have been thinking of the Tikka T3 Hunter, but would really appreciate thoughts/ suggestions for other (similarly priced) makes/ models, from other (more experienced) people!

Many thanks,

ND

Don't look any further than the T3. It's a winner.

I've heard that Bergara's are good also so maybe worth a look as they're a bit cheaper than Tikka's.

Look on the Tikka web site it lists all the models ie' stainless, blue, wood stock, adjustable stock, plastic stock, heavey barrel varmint, left hand action, cals available, twist rate in which barrel, lite models, threaded barrel or not.

BC.

Tikka undoubtedly a great choice, as would be Bergara, Howa, Sauer, Sako, Mauser M12 etc. its actually pretty difficult to find a poor rifle in the bracket you're looking at, they've just got different qualities.
Personally I would get to a gunshop that allows you to actually fire a rifle before you buy, and try a few makes out for fit, feel, weight and handling. this will make far more difference to your shooting than a brand name. I went in (to Ivythorn, Steve Beatty) intent on a Mauser, after trying that and sauer, blaser, ended up with a Schultz and Larsen very pleased I did tbh!
either way, enjoy it and nice first calibre choice too!

I just took delivery of a Begara - well pleased with it - much cheaper than tikka but 24" barrel so less choice in 6,5x55

Which ever one you get make sure it’s got a longer than 20 inch barrel as it really doesn’t do them any good being shorter

The most accurate rifle I own is a Tikka T3 stainless synthetic in 6.5x55. Right out if the box with Norma 120gr bullets it was almost touching. Loaded with 140gr gamekings they cloverleaf and have accounted for numerous deer with a big royal red stag amongst.

you cannot beat a Tikka on price. Agree a second hand sako 75 but they are very rare and if you are like me a lefty not as versatile as the Tikka.

I was in the same positions as you not long ago.I opted to buy a second hand t3 in 6.5x55 it had only had 50 rounds through it.
With a decent scope and mounts I was set up for just over a grand.
But I just say I haven't had a problem with Norma, federal or home loads and I will be looking to buy a t3 in 308 when finances allow.

I have had a Bergara B14 6.5 x 55 for a couple of years now. Fantastic rifle with a very smooth action. I won't be parting with it any time soon.

I bought the T3 hunter on recommendation and have to say it's a cracking rifle, compact but not small and it just fits, go and handle one

this is a really accurate caliber, you wont see any that cant shoot, think about what and where you will use it. If its shooting in the woods close up , light and short is fine, Personally i would look for a longer barrel and heavier (varmint) , a lot of people will remind you of the weight, the truth is longer and heavier is almost always more accurate, but the additional weight is unlikely to be more than 2 or 3 pounds, while i am knocking on, Im still 6ft and 14 stone, and can gain 2 pounds after a few beers on a friday night.

I use a varmint barrelled 22/250 for fox and which I had gone for a standard barrel :( just too damed heavy

Pretty much any rifle will shoot good enough for deer and most are better than the person shooting them

T3 stainless synthetic is plenty good enough but I dont like the stock. Not enough to rule it out but at some point id end up upgrading the stock

Howa is a much nicer stock but I dont like floor plate rifles

Of the two I prefer the T3. Plenty of aftermarket stocks to grab later on.

I have a Sako L691 from the mid-90s which functions flawlessly, shoots 1 inch 5-shot groups, has a great trigger and a stock that suits me very well.

Having said that, if you want a detachable magazine, then the Tikka would take some beating for accuracy regardless of price.

Thanks all, great advice. After trying a few out (Mauser etc) am still stuck on the Tikka T3, ideally Hunter-if I can find the right one. Considered Varmints (as much easier to get hold of etc) but tough farmer as I like to think I am, there's still only 9ish stone of me (even after beers!) so with scopes, sticks and, hopefully, deer to drag, it might get a bit tiring-or just make me stronger?! Also pretty much sold on a Schmidt and Bender 8 x 56 scope. This is def my kind of shopping....!
