The obvious solution to the backstop problem is repeal of the 1920 Government of Ireland act, for the Republic of Ireland to apologise profusely to HMG for their past ingratitude and disloyalty, after which we will re-integrate the 26 Irish counties back into the UK. At a stroke, that also settles the Irish re-unification question. Win-Win.

That dreadful nancy we have running Ireland at the minute, is merely a puppet of the eu. They have their hand up his backside working him. He keeps chanting the same lines, "we are at the heart of europe". Are we hell. They saddled us with 200bn in debt only a decade ago. I hope it backfires on him and that will be the last we see of him.
The reason the irish are so enamoured of the eu is because there are no dissenting voices here, not even token opposition, thats because the media is either controlled by the government, or owned by billionaire Denis O'Brien, who is cheek by jowel with the eu, as well as supporting the government party.

I have never worked out why the Irish were so vociferous in their opposition to British rule and so proud to be independence but surrender that same independence while warmly embracing EU rule. Why is that?

I have no clue, but suggest money is the answer. There was a gravy train for fat cats here, farmers got generous subsidies, big building projects were paid for by the eu, which made cronies of the government rich, and by slashing our corporate tax rates, we got large american multinationals to set their european bases up here.
I suppose you could say the same about Scotland.

ROI is a great place but the general populace suffer many problems through cost of living, homelessness, access to affordable healthcare and low income, particularly outside the urban centres. As in most Western countries, it is the elite, ruling class that collaborate to take wealth for themselves and subvert the democratic inclinations of the population. I repeat my question, worded differently - why have arch Irish republicans like Sinn Fein swapped their insular 250 year old ideal of Irish nationalism for wholehearted unionist support of an anti-democratic institution like the EU?
