Hahaha, didnt take much to kick it off!

Any shot can go wrong but the margin for error on a chest shot is massive compared to a head shot. Ive shot quite a few head shots recently and to be honest, all dropped on the spot (fallow and red) but then i had 2 in 2 days which the first dropped like a sack of spuds, then got back to his feet and was wobbling and staggering all over.. Not a nice sight but i was fortunate he was like this and not running for cover.. The shot was 80yds prone. The bullet hadn't taken the expected path and had deflected down into the back of his jaw. He obviously dropped to the second shot only a few seconds later. The second staggie dropped on the spot and was immobilised but still had signs of life.

What have i learned? Well, head shots are great most of the time as they drop to the spot, no carcass damage etc BUT i think i would prefer to follow up an animal with a shot misplaced by an inch into the chest rather than the same shot misplaced by an inch into the head. Also, even staggies can have pretty tough skulls which dont always give you the bullet path/expansion you expect.

Heres a question - how many of you would head shoot on your own permission but if you were invited on a days unaccompanied stalking on SD, would you still take a head shot?

Im just throwing it out there, not dictating what people should/shouldnt do.. its a free world, just my thoughts on the subject!

If it was agreed that it was ok then I would, not to show off but if it was appropriate for me to do so , I wouldn't think twice.

Like I said on original post,I am not against them,and ocasionally do it,but only at short ranges!the big problem I see is with long range shots,someone said all shots can go wrong as if to justify them ,this is true but if you miss the heart and lungs you generally hit the guts,prob the liver,most of us know when this happens and know to wait a while then track,tell me how do you track a deer with no jaw who will cover miles before you have time to reload!!!!

How do you track a deer shot in the brisket? No blood and can go for miles. Or a low one that takes a front leg off. A 3 legged deer can go on and on and on and on...

The poor shot in the chest doesn't always head in the direction of the gut/liver.

Not to say I haven't missed I have but a miss is a miss not a broken up face!!!

No, they were not all recovered.

I never said I had made dozens of poor shots, I said I had SEEN dozens of poor shots, however several would have been down to me over the years as it comes with the territory. Frankly 200 beasts in some peoples books is not an awful lot, no disrespect intended.

However if you want to talk figures, I was tasked of shooting around 120 Sika/Roe a year off of several thousand acres of forestry. I can say hand on heart, 99% were shot in the neck or head. All were found on the spot of being shot at, neither my mates dog or mine had much of a job except to recover from long cover where they had been standing.

Fair enough,but you seem like a sensible guy who knows what he's doing,but my original point is the boasting on internet video blogs about long range headshots,I don't think anyone can defend it,you mentioned most of your deer shot in heavy cover which probably means reasonable ranges?and by the way 200 deer is not really a lot ,but belive me its more than enough when you have a veggie wife who is not to pleased about having a kitchen as a butcher shop!!!

Well, as Dan says, if we are claiming bragging rights, how big is your veggie wife? Mine is huge...

If someone hasnt the capability and confidence to headshot they should stick within their limits.I have a headshot posted on youtube at 160 yards.Every vid i post i try and give a distance no matter where it is shot,but that doesnt mean someone is boasting about the range.

Must admit,I know I could hit the spot as well at that range as well ,but my point was should we ?I know of young stalkers who are more interested in shooting and getting a kill,rather than the stalking experience,and would veiw a vid like that and think that is the norm!! It is not targets we are shooting its live animals!!!!not everyone is experienced or competent enough to make those shots!!!

There's a youtube video 'thar 1000 metre shot' - i bet my bottom dollar there's no way he would have been aiming for the head - just lucky thats where the bullet hit.......at that range that would have been impossible to follow up if it had gone wrong - its sad but true that some folk just have no respect for their quarry whatsoever, youtube certainly has some horrible stuff, shooting deer with .50 cal etc etc...........makes me wild............real wild, especially all the laughing and inane ****..............

You will not find an abundance of failed head shots on You Tube, that is because they would reflect poorly on the shooters. There is so much more to place the shot precisely with a head shot that the shooter is compensating beyond most manageable field limits. The kill zone is incredibly small compared to a heart and lung shot, and what's wrong with a very precise one of these? Nothing, plus up to three inches of MPI to spare, for any sportsman this has to be the preferred shot although there are always bound to be exceptions - question is, are they necessary?

We head shoot rabbits, and never bat an eye!
We head shoot foxes in the head and never bat an eye!
We shoot foxes at longer ranges than we are capable and never bat an eye!
We want high pheasants at the extreme limit of not only our capabilities but the weapons capabilities and that is acceptable!
We shoot boar on the run which is acceptable!

BUT when it comes to Bambi..............
Lets face it if its ok to shoot a fox or a rabbit in the head which has less room for error, then it should be ok to head shoot deer, or are the others just vermin!

One rule for deer, the rest can just get the Texas hole shot!!
