204 ruger or 22-250

I’m trying to decide between a 204 ruger or a 22-250.
It’s mainly geese that’s getting shot because you can’t get near them with a shotgun. I’ve been using my 17hmr but I’d like a bit more power for the extra distance.
I do geese culling through a license from snh as there’s way to many on Lewis.
I know I can’t get 22-250 ammo easy but my rfd can easily get 204 as well.
I’m kind of swaying to the 22-250 but I’d like some opinions.

Never shot a 22-250 but love my 204R. Accurate out to 300yards, very little recoil and not much bang. Like your HMR on steroids

I think the .204 is more than capable on fox and as said before,so much quieter than the 22.250,with very little recoil.
I’m not sure there are any foxes in Lewis? There were sightings about ten years ago,did the manage to deal with them?

Your right there is no foxes on Lewis. So it will be all geese and long range bunnies and crows

I don’t reload. And I never herd about the ammo being in short supply. That might just be a game changer

If you do choose the .204,try to get a 1:10 twist with a 24” barrel,or as close to. This will enable you to use 39/40gr bullets at optimal speed.

I would definitely look into what the ammunition availability is like. I find it strange to believe that your RFD can't get the ammunition for the most common Varmint calibre in the world.
That being the 22.250, yet can source one thats pretty new around this part of the world, i would like to see in his stock room, bet he's got thousands of rounds of 204 he needs to vet down.

204R would be perfect but don’t expect to eat the bunnies!!
As said if you don't reload check the ammo situation as that will be a swinger. 204 is getting easier but 22-250 been around a lot longer

I have both. The 204 shoots flatter, the 22/250 is better in the wind. Both are great but I’d keep the 22/250 over the 204 any day, seems to hit harder.

I'd get a .223 and homeload pushing the 40gr vmax its neigh on identical to a .204 with lots more options and versatility .

I too would go for a 223, ammunition should be easy to get, cheaper, quieter than 22-250 and very little recoil and roe legal in Scotland.

To the OP have a look at Twenty Caliber Cartridge Guide there is a comparison chart between the 204, 223 and 22.250 - this may give you an idea why the 204 is no slouch

I have both - well a 22.250 and a 20 Tac - must confess the 20 is my go to rifle

He’s got plenty 22-250 that’s what quite a few people here are using for the geese. It’s the 204 that he doesn’t have and says he can get it for me if that’s the calibre I choose

Your 1st post states "he can't get 22.250"

Ah my bad mate! My phone autocorrected to can’t. It was meant to be can. But yeh I think I’ve settled on the 250. Just easier all round.
Do you know if there’s anything to watch if buying 2nd hand? Just make sure the barrel is clean is that all?
If I go 2nd hand I’m looking at Sako it tikka. Or maybe even a new tikka
