The requirement for obtaining a firearms licence in Essex is changing from Friday 1 November.
Medical information required from GP from November 2019

Those who wish to apply for a firearms or shotgun licence will now be required to supply medical information verified by a GP, as part of the application process. This applies to all applications regardless of medical conditions or not.
Chief Inspector Cornish, head of firearms licensing, said: “The change to policy will enable us to make more informed decisions when processing the applications - our aim is to ensure the safety of the wider community and those with an interest in firearms.
“The legislation under the Firearms Act 1968 and guidance from the Home Office states that before granting a firearms or shotgun certificate, the authorising officer must be satisfied that applicants can be permitted to hold the firearms or shotgun without danger to public safety. We believe medical evidence is essential in our decision making and that the current process needed to be reviewed.
“This procedural change will also streamline and extradite the process for applicants given all available material will be available to an officer.
“It the responsibility of the applicant to contact their GP to obtain this information – the forms can be downloaded from the Essex Police website (see 'Apply or register - Firearms and explosives licensing'.
As this falls outside of the NHS remit, there will be a cost implication.

What’s the problem?

It’s totally in accordance with the results of the recent HO consultation on firearms licensing, and anyway BASC will make a legal challenge poste haste.

Oh, wait a minute ............. the first hasn’t happened yet, and the second never will.:(

FFS for someone like my self who for the last 32 years of my life have probably been to doctors 2 handfuls of times this is going to be a pain in the arse and my license is up for renewal next year . I don’t even know my GP and unfortunately on some occasions understand them!(I’m not a bigot but it’s the truth!) and they change all the time.
Wish old bill would concentrate their efforts on nicking actual criminals ,specifically travellers in Essex , theives, little teenage drug dealers , nonces as head teachers and don’t forget climate change nutters trashing natural heritage but no they want to make more cash out of law abiding citizens and people going 1mph over the speed limit on an a road.

Thanks for posting though Paulo -I would of had a pleasant surprise at renewal next year!

“This procedural change will also streamline and extradite the process for applicants given all available material will be available to an officer.”

Will interviews be conducted by MI6 operatives in an overseas ‘facility’?
Jokes aside, this isn't the first time sloppy language has been used and it just doesn't lend any credibility. You would think there would be some form of coherence between their legal side and their press side. Same again when they sloppily call airguns firearms, they lack coherence with knife legislation. It's all very subjective unfortunately.

I think the misuse of the word 'extradite' as in 'hand over a criminal' is just a slip of an inarticulate and poorly educated Chief Constable of Police.
I hesitate to say idiot but who would allow a press release like this - BASC will be all over it like the Voice of Shooting should be. Maybe they will JR as Orion suggested - oh no that opportunity has passed with never a flutter from all of them - what a total shower.

Making the public safer is hilarious, all the misuse of legally held weapons resulting in death, as I have said quite few times before, results from flawed police process not applying those controls they had available before any stupid changes which would have saved the VAST Majority of murders, no wonder they cant get their ******** spelling write, their words right or probably go to the toilet without a helping hand.
Sorry - I'm livid - again.

Come on BASC - WADE IN. The waters warm and getting hotter -for you.

There be wading through the coffee and cream cakes for weeks before you hear of any sort of a rebuff , mind you what are the rest doing ? All Quite on the western front sorry Southeasten front :-|

Making the public safer is hilarious .......

No, no, they’re deadly serious about it. Didn’t you read this gem:

“The legislation under the Firearms Act 1968 and guidance from the Home Office states that before granting a firearms or shotgun certificate, the authorising officer must be satisfied that applicants can be permitted to hold the firearms or shotgun without danger to public safety.”

See, they’re applying the ‘guidance from the Home Office”, so it’s all above board ............

except they totally ignore the stated procedure for applying the medical evidence scheme, which is quite clear and unambiguous - total hypocrisy.
