good morning, today i dropped off at the game dealers the following, one fallow 64 kilo clean chest shot, one 6 kilo muntjac chest shot clean,5 rabbits ,received £81.45 ffs. wont even cover the fuel cost for the day! i think its time i put my feet up and let some once else take over. no more out before dawn /home after dark/ out in all weathers .dont get me wrong i do love my stalking but the costs of just getting out there and then being ripped off by the game dealer is just too much.
That's a big beast with a larder weight of 64 kilos.Saw what I thought was a big buck shot last week and was only 55 kilos larder weight. There is a photo of it in a post GAP 180 shot by Solvi .

The answer is of course to find a positive outcome and change your set-up. Rather than sell carcasses to a Game Dealer for what you consider too little money, you have to ADD VALUE and take on the butchery yourself. Get approval as a food handling establishment; design a nice label, get a decent vac-pack machine... and off you go. A typical Roe carcass which you may sell for say £40 to a Game Dealer will sell for around £150 once you have jointed it and split it in different cuts: Neck, Shanks, Casserole diced, loin-steaks, haunch-steaks, whole haunches, boned haunches, mince, burgers... So for say 2 hours work you have added around £100 in value. Or £50/hour

What business is it of yours if he’s a pro or recreational ?

Only that he put it out there that it is not a hobby, and never has been but if not a hobby and he's not a pro I wonder what stalking is to him.

He is on a pension so is retired which means he either worked as a professional stalker or did something else as profession which makes it a hobby and with only 2400 acres I would guess it is still only a hobby otherwise I wonder if he declares it to The Revenue as he has now confirmed that he does it to supplement his income.......

And you’re the taxman are you .......

The basis is, as with other things such as beating / picking up - it is treated as a hobby by a lot of people and therefore there are always people willing to take less money.

There are people who make part of their income from venison sales (as with beating / picking up) - i know because it is part of our business so a game dealer reduction does hit the bottom line - however if it were to get too drastic then we would simply go elsewhere.

Because very few people derive income from a hobby. And there are also plenty out there who would be happy to take on the hobby at a loss.
Good for them but this lad doesn’t want to give up his land so I guess that’s unfortunate for those people ....

Right guys back on to the original subject this will get your ears pricked up and may have a national effect... Hampshire Game who effectively have a monopoly in the central south have stopped taking Fallow full stop. No price drop. They are already completely snowed under with over 25 tons of deer in stock unprocessed. We are now stuffed in this area certainly for the next two weeks.....what will happen after that who knows. I can see a massive price drop.
The trouble is there are too many deer and people are at last getting on it and shooting them which is what the DI etc have been banging on about for years but now the market has fallen flat on it's face..........please someone PM me the number of one of these national dealers that pick up. I've got a hefty cull target to fulfill which ain't going to happen at this rate .
Not shooting anything now......what'll happen to the deer population in the area you don't have to be a rocket scientist to work out.have heard tell of holes being dug for deer .
The trouble is my prediction is that the market outside the area will soon get swamped and the dealers will be rubbing thier hands together and cut the price in half to say max 50p/lb and people will suck it up . This could knock on to far outside the area.

Very true , however if I pack in that could potentially leave my land being taken by one of the instant expert brigade on here .... the thought of them wandering around with a firearm under loose supervision doesn’t bear thinking about ....
Instant experts probably know more than some of the old school on here to be fair Jimbo. You can easily tell the ones that know bugger all as they usually start their posts with "I've been doing this for 30, 40 , 50 or even 60 years and then proceed to totally embarrass themselves by making monumental cock ups! You've seen the threads I'm sure! I can only assume that half of them only go out once a year so I guess in theory they're not actually lying?

I am unconvinced that people wanting to shoot deer and lose money doing it, is a good thing. Certainly doesn't make sense to me.

good evening, even working flat on the deer neither my assistant or i earn the £11500 tax threshold so the tax man would have no concerns, its not all about the money its about the stalker working very long hours in all weathers being bent over by the game dealers.!and ask would you like some more.just my own opinion of course.
