308 vs 30.06

Remember that Jim Corbett used to take man-eater Tigers in India with a .275 bolt action Rigby with open sights.

Fieldcraft, experience and bullet placement are more critical than calibre size.

I've not read every post but my 308's gave some impressive performance with 110g bullets and remember reading the kind of figures returned from the 06 with such light bullets.
Sure not ideal for large game but the versatility is quite awesome....that could be said of every .30" bottlenecked cartridge mind.

Cheers all
I sort of had my heart set on 30.06 to fill the empty slot but I have the chance to buy a
in my experience, buying anything other than what your heart is set on results in regret, and you end up restless and unhappy with what you have until you eventually crack and end up getting it. It’s happened to me with everything from cars to guns.

Personally I’d never own a 308 and love my 30-06, but I’ll admit it’s almost all prejudice. Although there’s nothing 308 can do that 30-06 can’t do and more, but a 30-06 can be loaded to 308 power levels for a reduced recoil. But then I never buy factory ammo so maybe that’s where 308 wins?

The bolt throw/speed of cycling due to ~10mm difference in cartridge length is probably the poorest most irrelevant argument out there. If a person is that worried about a millisecond or two in cycle time why would they be using a bolt action

Yep! From the age of thirteen, fourteen, I wanted a Boss. I bought a Powell in my mid-thirties, I had a Holland in my late-twenties but sold them both and remained restless. So, yes, in my late-fifties I eventually bought a Boss and settled with the matter.

Short action, modern stock geometry = 308

Long action, straight comb = 30-06.

A 308 with 165gr isn't far behind an 06 with 180s

If using factory ammo you won’t see the benefit of the larger case
The velocity increase is marginal and largely irrelevant
The factory offerings are available in both cartridges from 110/123gr up to 180gr
Hard to find 200gr 06 ammo anywhere reliably

Plinking ammo in .308 and the huge range of components is the reason I went .308
That and I found one that shot 0.1s out of the box..
