I have to say that for "home use" I think the modelling amps are excellent as they can sound really great at very low volumes plus they are "tidy" in the sense that you often don't need pedals and the like so this makes them much better in the home environment. In my youth it seemed I spent a proportion of my waking hours carrying Fender Twins around so the class D amps are fantastic in terms of weight, my GTX appears to be made of helium in comparison. I don't think there has ever been a better time to play guitar as a casual hobby.
Interestingly I've seen a few youtube type blind tests between modelling amps and the real thing and the experts generally failed to correctly ID the modelling amps and almost always preferred the modelling amp sound even if they knew it wasn't the "real" amp. I understand the love for the real thing but I have Fender Twins, Mesa twin rectifiers, AC30s, JCM800s etc. all sitting beside me with just a wee dial to change between them and it all cost less than £400 plus I've more effects pedals than I know what to do with.
Thanks for the Katana review, great that you like it and I must give one a try. I don't think I will be moving from my Fender but it is good to get other opinions on such things as you never know when I take up a career in Heavy Metal

Actually, before that career path will open up for me I probably need to be able to play more than 3 chords.
