How many of you play guitar?

I tried, I really did! Had music lessons for years. Pretty much tone deaf though. I just can't hear whether what I'm playing is correct. It all just sounds like a jumbled up noise. I don't get any pleasure out of listening to music either, although I enjoy watching people perform. To me, the music is very much secondary to the performance.
I think I know the feeling! Just like Les Dawson I sometimes find myself playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order!

Yep I play a bit. I'm getting back into it after many years lay off. I did sell all my guitars and other gear some years ago, but recently felt the urge to play again so I bought a Washburn dreadnought acoustic and a PRS SE Bernie Marsden single cut, which I really like. Musical influences are Led Zeppelin, Cream, Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. At the moment I'm relearning In My Time of Dying the LZ version in open G with slide. Still some work to do!

Nice, what do you think of the Boss combo? I'm running a Fender GTX as I like (mostly) Fender amps and cleanish tones and it does that very well but it isn't so good with higher gain sounds which isn't much of a concern for me. I heard the Boss is better than the Fender with the higher gain stuff.

both myself and my 2 girls play, the wife plays the piano and is classically trianed,

we have 2 6 strings and my 12 string, and yamaha pro keyboard and a 1960 dobro and a cheap dobro for me to beat the hell out of.

only play from time to time but the girls do open mic nights and the youngest is at UNI becoming an actor studying performing arts singing and dance,

Bob.

Hi,

I really like the Boss Katana. I have the 100 watt version that you can run at either 0.5 or 50 or 100 watts. It's got 5 channels a true acoustic, clean, crunch, lead and Brown (based on their Waza amp which is real high gain). It's great for all tones from clean to high gain. It's got built in Boss effects and you can store up to 8 amp and effects settings. You can down load free software for you laptop and then this gives you access to 55 different effects that you can load to the amp. I used to have tube amps Marshall and Black Star and I think this is better. It sounds better and is way more convenient to use than amp and floor pedal combinations. Try one out, I don't think you will be disappointed.

That's is a serious skill. My Dad rated Dawson highly as a pianist. You have to be very good to be able to do what Les did.

I have to say that for "home use" I think the modelling amps are excellent as they can sound really great at very low volumes plus they are "tidy" in the sense that you often don't need pedals and the like so this makes them much better in the home environment. In my youth it seemed I spent a proportion of my waking hours carrying Fender Twins around so the class D amps are fantastic in terms of weight, my GTX appears to be made of helium in comparison. I don't think there has ever been a better time to play guitar as a casual hobby.

Interestingly I've seen a few youtube type blind tests between modelling amps and the real thing and the experts generally failed to correctly ID the modelling amps and almost always preferred the modelling amp sound even if they knew it wasn't the "real" amp. I understand the love for the real thing but I have Fender Twins, Mesa twin rectifiers, AC30s, JCM800s etc. all sitting beside me with just a wee dial to change between them and it all cost less than £400 plus I've more effects pedals than I know what to do with.

Thanks for the Katana review, great that you like it and I must give one a try. I don't think I will be moving from my Fender but it is good to get other opinions on such things as you never know when I take up a career in Heavy Metal :-) Actually, before that career path will open up for me I probably need to be able to play more than 3 chords.

Why? There’s a shed load of hits with just three chords. In fact you can get away with two.

Non standard and with late1980's Reflex Red Dot active pickups:
I knew the guy who designed the Reflex range and lived in East Terrace, Gravesend. Hence the connection with Geoff Whitehorn.

A few that haven't seen the light of day for a while. Two more not on photo, Gibson Lp and Yamaha acoustic 7** something.
Plus Marshall 100 avt.

Some of the guitars you guys own and play make my Aria MX50 look rather "cheap and cheerful", but not to worry, it does me fine for now while I get back into playing.

May I balance that supposition by referring you to an obscure band that were reputed to only know three chords...called Stautus Quo.

I think Status Quo were a lot better at it than we give them credit :-)

Also, although I know three chords I can't play more than one of them on any given day!

I’ve just inherited this Fender telecaster from my dad who’s downsizing his collection.
He’s a member of a Rock n Roll band for the last 50+ years, so rather than have it hanging on a wall I’ve decided to learn to play.
I’ve already got Happy Birthday down for my wife’s upcoming 50th which took me just over a week.
Massive music taste but now try to play CCR....can’t go shooting as we’re in Lockdown Wales.....
Enjoying it so far

No experience of the guitar but I have played second fiddle to my wife for years.

Then along came children; then grandchildren.

Not sure I am even in the orchestra anymore...:-|

Have a look at Andy Guitar on YouTube. I find that he puts out some very good tutorials. I like his Fortunate Son one in particular, in that he shows the correct fingering. You’ll never get the intro or solos just from the tab.

I tried as a teenager.. but its safe to say that i have absolutely no artistic talent in any field of the arts... although i could get most of "White Xmas" out of a Bontempi organ.
