So now that we have completely left the EU...

Yep - what a great result for this small corner of the UK. Benefits so far include:-
* need to fill in customs declarations leading to stock delays or cancellations;
* supermarkets not able to obtain/carry full stock;
* some gundealers refusing to send reloading bits;
* pet passports including proof of Rabies (yes rabies!!) jabs;
* big names - like John Lewis stopping deliveries altogether;
* some delivery firms introducing a further charge regime; and only this a.m.
* Amazon telling its marketplace sellers that parcels going from GB to Northern Ireland will need a customs declaration!
The list is growing exponentially by the hour. Meanwhile messrs Gove and Johnson aka the Chuckle Brothers say all is well and its Covid related - you couldn’t make it up!

You cannot even get the brits together, ie Cornwall vs Yorkshire their prides and attitudes are still festering away. It is human nature to distrust folk from over the hill, was always so. Will not change soon.
It worked well enough to turn some very big land masses pink for quite a long time.
Even today, speaking English is still something people from all corners are encouraged to do.
Be proud of your Brit side, there's plenty of life left in the old dog yet to show the way.

Not sure anyone being invaded, enslaved and/or slaughtered thought so...

Much as anyone may dislike the EU, I think comparisons with the third Reich miss some fairly salient differences in intent, process and outcome!
But they are still trying to achieve what failed back in 45'............... Germania by the back door.

Even if they are, they’re rather glaringly failing to burn, pillage, subjugate and murder millions...

Sorry - no matter how much you dislike the EU, equating it with the Nazis is profoundly misleading and disingenuous.

Yeh - I think that equating the EU to Pre-second world war Germany is a bit of a stretch

I can see how Germany benefits - the dominant country; a large ready market for exports; a suppressed currency value (A DM would be so high that selling goods abroad would be a challenge)

However - boy are they paying for the privilege !!

Makes you wonder just how long the German people are happy to pay the gyros for all those 'hanger on' countries

The inefficiency and deceit of the EU, together with the subjugation of disparate cultures 'for the greater good' reminds me more of the USSR of old.

Still - we are out - although I can't bring myself to wish them well, I'm just glad that the EU is no longer our problem (at least not directly)

I was to be very clear not knocking England, just noting that all over the world strangers are a bit suspect, humane nature. Our intelligence overcomes this mostly but there are some glaring exceptions.

"Europe’s nations should be guided towards the superstate without their people understanding what is happening. This can be accomplished by successive steps, each disguised as having an economic purpose, but which will eventually and irreversibly lead to federation." -- Jean Monnet
Message ends!
OVER AND OUT
That should have been on the side of that bus.

You dont think the people of Germany voted in the nazi party on a ticket of war and extermination do you ?
They got promised economic prosperity, and for a while thats just what they got.

Then once there was no democracy left in the country, no choice, they had to follow the whims of the ruling elite...
If you cant see the parallels with the EU , try removing the blue starry glasses, we didnt just want to leave the bloc because we dont like Jaques foreigner....
We left because we didnt like the totalitarian direction they are heading.

Never been clear to me why a federal European state is such a bad idea?

I mean one that is actually and explicitly a state, with a more efficient and direct democracy?

Seems like a perfectly good idea!
That is because you are confusing "in theory" with "in practice"....

“In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not"

Oh I don’t know - indoctrinate the children firmly enough and put dissenters in the gulags. Should weld things together pretty sharpish...

Sadly, I think you’re right. A big, harmonious and properly democratic super state is a lovely utopian fantasy, but there is almost certainly an upper limit to both size and cultural variation, above which the whole thing becomes extremely unstable.
With enough re-education camps , mass graves and indoctrination , you could , but I'd rather not . I can't help but notice with the increase in globalism and post national identity , there's a corresponding growth in nationalistic groups and other tribal activities . Our own Prime Minister is still trying to live down a comment he made when was first elected . He pointed out that there is no distinct identities in Canada , let alone a Canadian one , we live in a post nationalistic world . Quebec , speaking of tribalism , wasn't too impressed . Granted , Trudeau has the intelligence of a wet towel , but a lot of progressives seem to share that school of thought . What is puzzling is when they're shocked by the rise in right wing popularity . I've said it before , but Trump was a symptom of what's wrong in the US , and the rest of the world , not the cause . We'd best get our heads around that fact or pay the price . As always , I enjoy your posts ............. even though I'm an old red neck lol .

India for a case in point?
