Gents Im thinking of asking for a variation for a lever rifle in the above configuration. Do i just put .38/.375mag in the calibre section on the variation form? and then what do you do about the ammo?

TIA

Martin

No. You'd put the calibre it is chambered (and in the UK and EU proof marked) in. Which in MOST cases would be .357 Magnum. However you may decide to in regard to cartridges ask for the ability to possess and acquire .38 Special ammunition and to also possess and acquire .357 Magnum ammunition.

you could put it down as 9mm .38sp / .357 mag same bullet choice . but 38/357 would be the norm

.38/.375mag - put them down for both rifle and ammo. Allows you to possess either. I have a .357 underlever but use .38sp mostly.

If you have time, its fun casting the bullets although I use it for target and not hunting.

You put 0.357 / 0.38 on your variation application, and this allows you to choose whichever one you wish when you find it. You put the same down for ammunition.
Shooterman1 is correct though, in that some underlevers are specifically chambered for 0.357 only, and this will be stamped on the side of the barrel.
If you wish to use both rounds, you will need to purchase a rifle which specifies 0.357 / 0.38.
I recently had to machine a set of guides on a guys Marlin rifle ( which he had purchased without realising that it was 0.357 only ), so that he could use 38 specials in it as well.

Thought 38 special could be shot in .357 and not vice versa owing to 38sp having a lower pressure (17k psi) and .357 suited upto 35k psi. I shoot 38sp in my .357 without any issues.

The point was that if the rifle is purely a 0.357, the loading gates won't necessarily cycle the shorter 0.38 special case. In the case of the Rossi ( sorry I quoted Marlin earlier ) stamped 0.357 only, the load gates only had a narrow slot for the rim at the length of the 0.357 case, so the shorter 0.38 special case would not make the slot in the guide as it lifted and so would not feed. The guides needed to be machined 1/10" wider to accommodate both rounds. The lifter was OK, but the loading guides wern't. Just something to bear in mind.

Back when it was legal I owned a Ruger Blackhawk revolver. It was sold as a .357 magnum but the handbook stated that it was suitable for both .357 and 38 special.

All arms, weapons, chambered for .357 Magnum will chamber and fire .38 Special. However in those that are not revolvers or single shot single loaded arms they may not reliably (or indeed at all) feed .38 Special from their magazine unless the overall length of that cartridge and bullet duplicates the OAL of a factory .357 Magnum cartridge. A very loose and imprecise comparison would be 2" 12 bore cartridges in a 12 bore chambered for 2 3/4" cartridges. OK in a side by side or O/U but maybe not in a pump or self loader.

maybe so by a hair but never had a problem in k's of pulled 9mm 135gr loaded in my old comp wheel gun or 38super .
Yes it was common practise back in the day to load 9mm (.355" bullets) in .38 spl cases for short range lightweight loads. Accuracy wasn't super great compared to using the correct .357" bullet but for short range use it was quite acceptable and the 9mm bullets were often cheaper.
Incidentally there are several .357 revolvers made that will chamber and fire 9x19 ammunition in addition to .38 spl and .357 magnum, usually by utilising full moon clips.

OP, I would definitely put .357/.38 down on your application, both for the caliber of the rifle and the ammunition. This will allow you to purchase the rifle in .357 Mag and to buy .38 Special for cheaper practice rounds. The firearms department will have seen this before several times since gallery rifles in pistol calibers have been in use in the UK.

I had a Puma lever action for a while, which I remember seemed to cycle both equally well.

I even asked for 7.62mm/.308 and 5.56mm/.223 rifles and ammunition on my FAC in order to make sure that I had appropriate freedom of action when buying my rifles and ammunition.

Correct but you can load a 38 what ever oh so many with 9mm bullets ,

or
9mm browning long
9mm wm same performance .375 but 9mm
lots more 9mm carts out there not just a 9x19 PB
