Hi everyone, just finished the Wild Boar course that BASC Scotland ran over the past 2 days,

Having no experience with Wild Boar i went on the couse to further my knowledge on them. The course it’s self was really good and informative. I would highly recommend to go on and do it.

Thanks again to Donald and Jake for a real good course.

Now looking forward to try get some Boar hunting in the Uk or Europe this year.

If you can overlook the Swiss German dialogue there is some good visual info to see like the damage they can do to a crop/field. It is available till May 2022. The main theme is african swinefever.

Can you now identify a driven boar after taking this course 😝

Would you do it for free?
No, simply because I know how to use a knife and fork without having to pay (anything, mileage etc etc.) for the knowledge. Boar shooting in this country is usually guided so, as with anything else, you learn by gathering experience. I am opposed to selling shooting knowledge, have and always will pass it on for free if asked, as do many guides and ghillies.

Triton I wouldn't exactly say that. While it may often be guided you would be surprised by just how many individual shooters are involved in taking boar in some areas, especially around the Forest of Dean. At times it seems like every man and his dog is involved in some way or another and much of it goes on totally unreported.

I did the NGO online version of WB1, it gave me something interesting to do during the last lockdown and as far as I'm concerned it was excellent value for money.
Did you pass ?
If so
When did you find out you had passed out of interest?

Help! cant find the letter got the course in the morn know its elveden estate in Thetford no idea of postcode or starting time ... anyone got any idea of usual practise .. will get there for 0800 otherwise

If you want to expand your knowledge of boar going on a course then that is no bad thing. How long though before its a must have in the UK to be able to shoot boar or get boar added to you FAC? Thats where I would have a problem with it.

Alan things have changed slightly in the years since you left the country but we haven't, well at least in most areas anyway, quite got to the position where you have to possess DSC1 or even DSC1+Boar before a FAC is granted. As regards specifically mentioning boar on FACs, that's usually just covered by AOLQ these days (any other lawful quarry). Personally whether you agree with it or not I can see that day eventually coming.

Like you say any extra knowledge and learning something new can only be beneficial.

As for those that don't want to pay any of the shooting organisations for running these courses the choice whether you want to give some of your hard earned cash to the NGO or BASC is entirely up to yourself and its no one else business.

Odd isn't it how you aren't allowed to drive on your own in a potentially lethal motor vehicle without first passing theory and practical tests and even then third party insurance is compulsory whereas you can possess an equally lethal firearm purely on the whim of a Chief Constable's FLD?

I totally get the point that you are making Tim but for the sake of discussion only, you could say "but you can drive on your own without having passed any tests, and without insurance", only that it would have to be on private land. So is shooting any different? :)

Perhaps in one significant respect, a projectile from a carelessly discharged firearm might travel beyond the land and cause damage, injury or death beyond it . And yes trained and experienced people have done so, just the same as RTAs can be caused by experienced drivers who have passed a test , although in the latter case there is still at the very least some insurance to fall back on.

Mike, I'm a little behind with the changes in the FAC rules. If it were to be needed to do the DSC1 or the boar equivalent before getting a FAC then it should be a compulsory test. As you know we have the compulsory hunting exam before you can get a hunting firearm. A couple of years ago there was a boar management course (No it did not make you a boar manager) advertised in the local paper. I put my name down for it but it was under subscribed so it was cancelled.
I had my first go in 18 months down at the shooting club on the running boar range this morning. I shot reasonably well and not so rusty as I thought I'd be.

Alan it wouldn't surprise me at all if within the next 5 -10 years a compulsory hunting test similar to that in Sweden, Germany or France will become a prerequisite to the grant of a FAC.
I just hope that we will be able to claim grandfather's rights.
