Sprocker pup missing toes

Yea at the cost of £10,000+

My Mrs bought a pup, turned out to have a fistula, the vets were almost creaming in their pants it was so rare, they were literally arguing with each other over who was going to do the surgery because the experience was something special for them.

I hadn’t even told them wanted surgery.

When I asked for details they said it would be between £6,000-£10,000 and they may have to break the pups hip bones when they go in… and he was likely to have issues the rest of his life 😳

The pup went back to the breeder and we had our money back. The breeder and I shook hands on the agreement that the pup would not be allowed to suffer.

That was the best I could do for him I’m afraid.

If it were me I’d get the vet to take a look at him when you go for docking and decide then if it’s going to have any impact in the future. If it is going to have an issue then;

If no one wants to buy the pup with the deformed foot are you willing to keep it yourself?
I my opinion 100% the right call on your part, I wonder sometimes why owners put their animals though such surgeries.
I’m sat in the vets waiting room now. I can’t see the pup been marketable, so if there’s a chance it will some form of quality of life, I will probably keep it

Be interested in your vet's opinion and a picture. Greyhounds runn fine missing middle toes
Vets given me some cream although he said the bitch will probably just lick it off anyway, he’s also given him a shot of antibiotics. You can’t give pain killers to new born pups anyway as their kidneys won’t handle it. He said it’s lucky it’s a back foot, however it will probably always walk with a limp and may have to have the leg removed in the future, or I could have the super vet work his magic when it’s old enough.
I will see how the little fella gets on, it will either be kept or given away to a friend or family member if it’s not suffering.

Going out on a limb here (sorry) that might, just might be OK. Young tissue is phenomenal with regeneration, just keep it clean. The nails might slough, but it may still have a functioning limb. It looks like you've got a new dog called Stumpy anyway.

I imagine this pup will work out fine so long as it is kept clean and heals ok. A friend was offered a cocker from a good working line which was born without any bones in one foot. It had no toes and a small ‘bean bag’ pad. It was as though the toe pads and the main pad were one large pad with no bones therin.

The breeder would have had it put down, thinking it was unsellable, unless my friend took it on which he did (at his wife’s insistence). It turned out to be a cracker. He had a habit of holding its gimpy foot aloft and seeking sympathy when scolded ( an intelligent dog) or if he had bolted after a bunny he would hold the bad foot up and wait for fuss like a naughty child.
But he was a great worker, utterly unaffected by the lack of toes on a front paw. I have only this experience to go on but I suggest the pup will be fine.

A dog handler colleague, once had his dog injure a paw.

Whilst he recovered he was "fussed over" - something that my colleague said was unusual for a working dog.

Long after the dog healed, whenever he "transgressed" the dog would offer up his "injured' paw for attention and sympathy. As you say, intelligent dog.

Back to the OPs issue - I very much hope the pup goes on to have a good life.

I had a ferret kit with missing toes....called him two toes....he had the snip and we used him on our group of working jills. A very kind ferret used to run around the shed chatting away as they do, pull on your boot laces.

hope there is a out come for the pup.

My bitch has just had a littler of pups. One of them is missing the skin over his toes, part of the pad and his toe nails on his Black right foot.
I can only imagine that the bitch has damaged him when getting him out of his sack at birth. I have covered the foot in Terramycin spray. Anyone else experienced anything like this, if so how did the pup get on later down the road.
thanks

How is the pup?
