Cold bore first shot accuracy

I had an lr like that. First shot after cleaning ~1” high and ~1” right, second shot (and onwards) literally bullet on bullet.
Stopped cleaning it and no issues with first shot from cold.

I wouldn't clean it. I cleaned my .17HMR one time and it shot like a shotgun for the first 15 rounds after cleaning. After that, it was bang on. I now never clean it.

Or shoot a group with a cold barrel. Leave it 5 minutes or so between shots so the barrel is properly cold.

Many rifles do shoot differently with a cold barrel. As Steel heats up it expands. If there is any inconsistency in the barrel concentricity it can cause slightly different point of impact.

As far as i am concerned with a stalking rifle it’s the first round that counts. And to be honest most deer it won’t make a bit of difference if the bullet is an inch so off from point of aim.

Point of aim can also change by the way you hold the rifle, if you hold it loosely or squeeze it in tight, rest it on a bag, sticks or bipod. A moderator slightly loose etc etc.

We all strive for little tiny groups, but field accuracy with first shot is what counts.

And I have always found a good crimp makes a big difference in how well a reload shoots.

I understand lots of people are saying cold shooter. With this gun I’ve shot around 150 rounds at paper and never seen it before. So I’m not sure it’s that. It isn’t happening with any other rifle either.

Also yes shot 1 (yellow writing) was a clean barrel but shot 6 and the other target were not clean barrel. So that doesn’t tie in to me.

I have found this now that I have switched to non-toxic factory in my Blaser R8. It was always as HandB described before with my 6.5 swede and lead; no variation unless I let the barrel get too hot.

I've just switched to another R8 in .308" and it seems to have the same issue as you. Now, I get a very different point of impact from a cold barrel and I have lost a lot of confidence.

But I am going to try another session as JCS suggests, with bipod and rear bag. It could still be me.

Good luck finding the solution.
Do let me know how you get on. I was Googling R8’s last night, worried that it’s the rifle. Interesting that even they famed R8 might have some issues

Does the rifle exhibit this ‘behaviour’ if you conduct the same 5-shot group test with a cold uncleaned barrel? By “cold” I mean the first group of the day and not simply putting the rifle to one side for 15-minutes.

Ps: Just seen the Op’s more recent posts so my advise is don’t waste anymore time in getting shot of the rifle.

Yes, the group with the black writing on was cold (first group of the day). I’m going to try and get out tomorrow evening and shoot another group, without mod. To see what happens

Worth trying as mods clearly impart significant stresses on a barrel which will only be magnified in a lightweight sporter. Do you remove the mod when rifle not in use and is it an over-barrel type fitting?

No it tends to stay on the rifle unless cleaning. So first (black writing group) it had stayed on. Second (yellow writing) it and the rifle had been cleaned and yes over barrel.

Well it would be brilliant if removing the mod cures the problem but then you’re still stuck with a rifle that’s not fit for purpose as clearly you want a moderated rifle.

Also, try zeroing for the first (cold) shot to establish if it holds that zero.

Its bob on even on a cold morning .
Where do you get your targets, like the markings on them🤔?

I know, it’s frustrating. I’m sure I’ll get there. I was hoping their would be an obvious thing I’ve missed.

Don't clean it. ~Muir
Seconded, my 6.5 will shoot about an inch and a half high and right on a clean barrel, second shot moves half the distance back , and the third will be back on zero. (100 m)
Its not cold barrel , if I dont clean it , it holds zero first shot.

Obviously it needs cleaning ! But I tend to only do it if its going to sit for longer than a week (rare) or it gets wet.
