.22 hornet barrel

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has had their barrel shortened as looking to get mine done, how short can you go before it affects accuracy and range?
Look forward to your replies

I thought of having my two barrels chopped along with the 204 but thought better of it, they’re all so very very accurate as original, if it ain’t broke I’d leave it as it is

Difficult as I need it for vehicle work hence looking at reducing length.

I shortened mine to 16 1/2"
Lost about 200fps, (now down to 2800 ish with 40gn Vmax and 13gn lilgun) but it still shoots 1/2moa.
It's now much handier and perfect for truck work.

Cheers

Thanks Bruce, was beginning to think it was a no go, same reason I am looking to shorten length, now I have just got to find a good Gunsmith as still want mod on the end 👍

yep
That was my reason to be honest, ive got a blaser in 204, anschutz and weihrauch in 22 hornet, I just don’t want to mess any of em up

ive heard excellent results from shortening and equal amounts against it, I erred to stay as they were built, if I’m honest I’m glad I did, all of em are a joy to shoot and the accuracy are unbelievable

what kept jumping up at me was that rifle manufacturers spend a huge amount of time perfecting the best and most accurate rifle they can, and they are good at it, why would I want to risk cocking it all up by cutting a lump off the end

thats only me and my own thoughts, I’m sure there are plenty out there who have had considerable success

I've just finished a foxing night out, in my truck and off sticks managed to grass 5 foxes with the 204 with no effort just a steady hand out to 240 yds according to the RF on the thermal virtually aim and shoot, i wouldn’t want to mess that up

Good luck and I hope it all works out for you :thumb:

Did you hands-on chronograph the loads before cutting the barrel? 3000 fps seems snorty for that bullet and powder charge. ~Muir

I took mine down to 18". It improved the accuracy (probably by having a nice new crown on it?) and I didn't notice a change in the drop over 200m.

The Hornet isn't a big case. You'll not lose much velocity.

Had mine cut to 16.5", best thing I did, paired with a Wildcat panther mod and 45gr Remington soft point. Its like handling my 22lr in the car and just generally easy to handle. Drops foxes easily, so far I've used it to about 175yards. Can't say accuracy changed.

My Weihrauch in 22 Hornet has a factory barrel of 18". I love the little gun, it's accurate and fun to shoot but I struggle to get the speed others post about. My most accurate load with 40g Nosler Varma BTs is going about 2600fps. My 35g Vmax are about 2800. This is with a full case of both H110 and Lil' Gun. This is with a short Mae Scout over barrel moderator. Still does the job very well out to 100-150 yards.
