Dog insurance

Currently putting £100 aside per month for my 11 month old Sprocker but following a trip to the vets & being stunned by the bill for a consultation & urine test I’m considering taking out insurance

Anyone got some recommendations for a decent company?

Cheers

Have been with petplan for years but having 4 dogs that was getting astronomical (especially as one is now 10 and another 8). Stuck them all on one policy with manypets (was bought by many). Not had to claim yet so can’t comment on that side of things but on paper the cover is the same if not better and all of them are now coming in just over what one was costing with Petplan. I will say petplan have never questioned a claim and I have fully had value from them over the years but the prices crept up and up to the point of no return for me.

Go on the comparison websites and browse the policies, choose the one that best suits your needs. We always look at least two comparison sites to get a broad spectrum.

PLEASE
just make sure dental care is covered , I paid £30 per month for five years only to find out I wasnt
Most policies don’t cover dental care as standard. You need to take it out as an “extra”
You are not the first to find out that your policy doesn’t cover you.

On my local walk we meet a lot of people with various breeds ( mostly interbred pedegree types)
with lots of problems, most complain of the cost of vet iinsurance bills, up to a hundred pound per dog per month.
Some say it depends on the size of the dog, one person was saying that their eleven year dog
has had twenty thousand pounds of vet bills, obviously someone is taking the P.
It seems that since vet insurance came into vogue the vet bills increased substantially, what a coincidence
and how does that leave the uninsured ? Could it possibly be a money making scheme from both ends ?
We had an eleven year old cross bred labrador and he didn't cost anything until the end, gone are the days..
now everything is valued in pounds unfortunately including pupppies.

Yes, everything you say is spot on. I think the insurance-backed care is directly linked to the vet's inflated pricing (god help us all when the NHS goes this way). Things haven't been helped either by TV programs like Animal Hospital, we are all made to feel as if we should be running to the vets every 5 minutes or we aren't worthy of owning a dog. Like someone else on this thread has said, I've stitched up plenty of terriers and never had a problem, all healed up lovely, mind you they are constitutionally very sound dogs. Going back to the influence of the TV, it's affected lots of areas over the years namely the house renovation/let's make a huge profit, and the antique game, everyone is an expert on both now we've had a few decades of watching Flog It & Homes Under The Hammer type programs. I think now the small independent practices have all but disappeared we should all think about steering one of the kids down the veterinary route. Lucky old VSS having one in the family ;)

Was with Direct line for £30 a month for a year old dog. Once he turned one it jumped to £56 for the same cover. Stopped it since.

Can well believe big numbers as my pals fully trained lab has cost well over £12k recently.

Speaking with other owners - LV sounds reasonably priced for the cover.

We have insurance until the premiums start getting stupid - usually around 6 years of age, then we put the same amount (as the quote (which was £200 per month this year)) into a savings account. We are just about breaking even this year.

We are taking a risk; there are some conditions that are reversible even in a fairly elderly dog that we would struggle to cover but even with insurances the excess can be eye watering for some chronic conditions - such as chemotherapy so we tend to be conservative in our approach. We give our dogs a great life while they are alive, and parting is traumatic, but when it's time to go, there's no point dragging it out.

Make sure that that you have some liability insurance in your house or shooting insurance to cover the unexpected - e.g. damaging a car bumper if it gets knocked over.

Thanks for the replies

Been having a look around today & LV come out best on their lifetime policy. 10k of cover for £30 per month. Will need to call them in the morning as I’ve a few questions on the dental cover. All going to plan I’ll have her covered at the end of the call.

Agria nearly doubled my premium on first renewal for a young dog and were immediately binned.
What breed out of interest? They were competitive for my Norfolk and Teckel, but I’ll be sure to keep an eye out at renewal time.

I been with Agria for 5 years and been relatively happy with them. However latest monthly premium has gone up to £50 per dog that’s £100 a month for my two dogs. The excess is £160 per claim per dog and then 10% of the remaining bill. Average vet bill for consult and meds is about £95. So do the math…insurance is not worth it. Put £100 aside each month and your covered.

Yep, and if you get lucky and don't need any big operations you've got the money still. Insurance is a racket Al Capone would be proud to run!

Our insurance is £11 per month for a 3-year-old border terrier, and £16 per month for an 18-week-old border terrier, that's got 10k per incident, the pups will come down next renewal, that's with Ageaus.
